IPL 2022 | It's just a matter of one good innings: Gavaskar backs Kohli and Rohit to come good

Two of the most popular cricketers in India, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, have struggled to get going in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League. Although Virat's RCB has done well to bag five wins in seven appearances, Rohit's MI has become the first team to lose seven matches in a row in the tournament's history.

In seven innings, Virat has garnered 119 runs at an average of 19.83, with the highest score of 48, with luck not favouring him on a few occasions as well.

On the other hand, Rohit has 114 runs in the same appearances as Virat at an average of 16.29. However, after a knock of 41 in the first fixture against DC, he has not been able to convert his starts into a big one.

Both the players were dismissed on a duck in their last outing in the tournament. However, their form has undoubtedly raised eyebrows due to the T20 World Cup being scheduled later in the year.

In the latest interaction on Star Sports, the former Indian cricketer turned commentator Sunil Gavaskar has opined on the form of Virat and Rohit. He feels it is just a matter of one inning, which can help regain their confidence.

Gavaskar felt that if Rohit scores around 80-90 runs, it will undoubtedly help MI post a substantial total. Over the years, Rohit has been the backbone of the batting unit of the team to secure five titles.

"Form is invariably one inning away. He has gone 7 innings without scoring the kind of runs that we all expect from him. But you can regain your form in just one inning. That's what Mumbai Indians have to keep hoping for. What it will also do, it will make an impact on the rest of the team. "

"When he scores runs, you can be pretty certain that the team will post big totals. He is the kind of person who will go on to get into the 80s and 90s. His form is important for MI," Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

Gavaskar reckoned that the opposition team has pounced to take the wicket of Virat if he has made a mistake, which is proving to be his last one as well.

"It's happening to Kohli too. Kohli's first mistake is turning out to be his last mistake. So for both these players, it's just a matter of one innings, one innings where you get to 30, once they get there, they will get the big score," Gavaskar concluded.
