IPL 2022 | 'It can happen'- Virender Sehwag on CSK's chances for the playoffs

It was a strong start to MS Dhoni’s captaincy stint in the Indian Premier League 2022, wherein Chennai Super Kings (CSK) secured their third victory of this season against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 13 runs.

The CSK openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway were terrific to stitch a 182-run stand, with the team posting 202 on the board. In the bowling unit, Mukesh Choudhary scalped 4 wickets, while Maheesh Theekshana and Ravindra Jadeja returned with a fine economy.

Ahead of this game, Jadeja had passed the CSK baton back to Dhoni due to the team’s disappointing performances and his individual form as well.

After this fixture, the former Indian opener Virender Sehwag opined on Thala’s captaincy, and how the Indian cricket witnessed a change under him.

“I have been with that man since 2005 and I have seen Indian cricket change under him,” Sehwag said to Cricbuzz.

Dhoni’s first stint as a captain in the ICC tournament came in the 2007 T20 World Cup, where he led the Indian team to win the inaugural edition. The dashing opener recalled the victory of India in the Commonwealth Bank Series in 2008, comprising teams like Australia and Sri Lanka.

The former opener batter reckoned that the team was able to win crunch moments of the game, after he took over this role. In the end, Sehwag concluded by saying that CSK can surely fight back and qualify for the playoffs, with Dhoni back at the helm.

“After that we won several ICC knockouts, home series under him, the ones which we used to lose before but they turned into victories. So keeping that in mind, I am saying that it can happen [CSK winning 6 games in a row]," Sehwag further added.

Currently, CSK is positioned ninth in the points table with 3 victories in 9 games. In their next league match, they will face Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on May 4 at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune.
