Team India is currently involved in a five-match T20I series against South Africa, with the final and decisive match scheduled to be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday, December 19. Led by Suryakumar Yadav, the Men in Blue hold a 2-1 lead in the series and will be aiming to seal the contest with a win in the last match.
Once the South Africa series ends, India will move into the final phase of their preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. India will face New Zealand for a three match ODI series and a five-match T20I series.
Both the South Africa and New Zealand T20I series are a part of India's planned preparation for the marquee event, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, beginning February 7, 2026. India will enter the tournament as the defending champions, having lifted the T20 World Cup title in 2024 under the leadership of Rohit Sharma.
When will BCCI announce T20 World Cup squad?
In a recent development, according to Gaurav Gupta from the Times of India, the Indian selection committee is scheduled to meet on Saturday (December 20, 2025) at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai to finalise the squads for the New Zealand T20I series and the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
Reports suggest both squads will be the same, with the selectors unlikely to make any major changes at this stage. India captain Suryakumar Yadav, who is currently in Ahmedabad for the final T20I against South Africa, is also expected to attend the meeting.
Ajit Agarkar is expected to address the media at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, although an official confirmation from the board is still awaited.
The selectors will initially submit a 15-member squad to the ICC as part of the tournament protocols. While this provisional squad must be submitted in advance, teams are allowed to make changes closer to the start of the tournament in case of injuries or a dip in form.
India's schedule in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026
India will begin their campaign on February 7 against the USA at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. They will then travel to Delhi to face Namibia in their second Group A match, before flying to Colombo for a high-profile clash against arch-rivals Pakistan.
India will conclude their group-stage matches against the Netherlands in Ahmedabad.
