ICC released three nominees for ICC Player of The Month award for the January and India’s mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy has managed to make the cut. He had a terrific five-game T20I series against England wherein he scalped 14 wickets, including a five-wicket-haul.
As the month of January concludes, it is time to reflect on some of the players who have given truly exceptional performances and dominated the headlines.
The ICC recently published its list of nominees for the Player of The Month award for the month of January 2025, which included some of the most prominent names in world cricket.
Varun Chakravarthy gets nominated for ICC Player of The Month award
Varun Chakravarthy made his comeback into international cricket worth with scintillating performances in India's T20I series against England. The English batters were unable to decipher his spin as he produced match-winning spells consistently.
In the first T20I at Eden Gardens, Chakravarthy earned the Player of the Match award with figures of 3/23. His most remarkable display came in Rajkot, where he spun through the English batting lineup, claiming five wickets for just 24 runs.
By the end of January, Chakravarthy had taken 12 wickets at an average of 9.41 and maintained an excellent economy rate of 7.01.
Apart from Chakravarthy, Jomel Warrican also got a nomination after he had a career-defining series in Pakistan, playing a pivotal role in helping West Indies secure a series draw. In the first Test, he recorded his career-best bowling figures of 10/101 and contributed an unbeaten 31*.
He returned stronger in the second Test, capturing nine wickets for 70 runs, including a five-wicket haul. The pacer finished January with nine wickets and 85 runs, earning the Player of the Series award.
Last but not the least, Noman Ali was announced as the third candidate. He was Pakistan's best spinner in the series against the West Indies.
In the first Test, he took six wickets and in the second match, he made history by taking a memorable hat-trick, the first by a Pakistan spinner in Test cricket. Noman ended the match with figures of 10/121, and through the series, he garnered 16 wickets.
