India women’s team to tour Sri Lanka in June, new ODI captain set to be announced

In the latest development, the Indian women’s cricket team will be touring Sri Lanka in June to play three ODIs and as many T20Is. It will mark their first international series after the 2022 World Cup, held in March-April.

A source close to the BCCI has said that India will depart for Sri Lanka on June 18, with the first ODI will take place on June 23, and the series will culminate on July 7 with a T20I fixture.

The team for this tour is likely to be announced by the selectors by the end of this month. If the reports are to be believed, the senior selection committee is expected to announce the new captain for the ODI team.

Under the leadership of Mithali Raj, Women in Blue were below average with only three wins in seven appearances of the Women’s World Cup and could not qualify for the knockouts.

Moreover, among notable names, Raj and Jhulan Goswami were missing from the Women’s T20 Challenge 2022 squads. On the other hand, Deepti Sharma has replaced Raj as the captain of the Velocity team this year.

It is touted that the Indian setup, which saw the likes of Jemimah Rodrigues and Shikha Pandey being overlooked, will witness significant rejigging. And the above mentioned are expected to return to the scheme of things.

Further, the reports have also mentioned that Ramesh Powar has reached Pune to witness the Women’s T20 Challenge from close quarters, which will help him finalize the squad for the upcoming tournaments this year.

After this series, the Indian team will feature in Commonwealth Games 2022 in July-August. After that, three ODIs and as many T20Is will occur between India and England in September.
