Cricket evolved and with it, the shape of India’s cricketing history changed. Let us look at India’s journey in the limited-overs. 

First ever ODI captain of India: Ajit Wadekar was the man to lead India in their first ever ODI in 1974.

First Ever ODI match of India: India played their first ever ODI match against England at Headingley, Leeds on the 13th of July,1974. In a 55-over match, India lost by 4 wickets. 

First Ever ODI win for India: India’s first win in the limited overs format came against East Africa in the 1975 World Cup. Under Srinivas Venkataraghavan’s leadership, India won the match by 10 wickets at Headingly, Leeds. 

First Ever ODI century for India: The first century for India was scored by Kapil Dev. He played an immortal knock of 175 runs of 138 deliveries in a do-or-die match for his team in the 1983 World Cup against Zimbabwe.

First Ever Double Hundred in ODIs for India: The first ever Double Hundred in ODIs for India was scored by Sachin Tendulkar against South Africa in 2010 at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium, Gwalior. He scored 200 runs in the match off 147 balls, this was also the first time ever a double century was scored in the history of ODIs. 




T20 is the newest format of cricket. India was skeptical about the format at the beginning, but the format has been the most beneficial for Indian cricket both financially and qualitatively. 

First ever T20I captain of India: Virender Sehwag led India for the first time in the shortest format of the game in a match against South Africa.

First Ever T20I match: India played their first ever T20I match against South Africa at Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg in 2006. India won the match by six wickets. 

First Ever T20I half-century for India: The first ever half-century for India in the shortest format was scored by Robin Uthappa against Pakistan at Kingsmead Durban during the 2007 T20I World Cup. 

First Ever T20I World Cup win for India: India won the inaugural edition of the T20I World Cup in South Africa in 2007. India won the final against Pakistan by 5 runs to lift the trophy under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.

First Ever T20I century for India in T20Is: The first ever T20I century for India was scored by Suresh Raina in 2010 against South Africa at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, West Indies. He scored 101 runs off 60 balls in the match as India won by 14 runs. 

First ever five-wicket haul for India in T20Is: Yuzvendra Chahal picked up the first ever five-wicket haul for India in T20Is. He achieved the feat in 2017 against England, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. His figures read 6 wickets for 25 runs from 4 overs.
