In a major development, India have been penalised for maintaining slow over rate in the first ODI against New Zealand in Hyderabad.

As per article 2.22 of the ICC code of conduct, the players should be fined twenty per cent if the team is found an over short in any international game.

As match referee Javagal Srinath ruled India three overs short in the allotted time, the players were sanctioned a hefty sixty per cent fine.

However, no formal hearing was conducted as the Indian captain Rohit Sharma accepted the offence, levelled by the on-field umpires Anil Chaudhary, Nitin Menon, third umpire K N Ananthapadmanabhan and fourth umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal.

Regarding the series, the Men in Blue registered a narrow 12-run victory over the BlackCaps in the first ODI of the series. Riding on Shubman Gill's sensational double ton, India posted a mammoth 349 on the board.

Although Michael Bracewell gave the hosts a run for their money, Shardul Thakur got rid of him, ensuring India had the last laugh in the last-over thriller.

The second match of the series will be played in Raipur on Saturday.
