David Warner resurrected the Australian innings after Mitchell Marsh’s early dismissal against India in their opening World Cup 2023 fixture. The dynamic southpaw shared over 50 runs with number three Steve Smith, and took the attack to the Indians despite Australia’s early setback in the game.

At his graceful best, Warner scorched the Chepauk turf with elegant drives, cuts and pulls against India’s new-ball attack to race towards a solid start at the top of the order. In doing so, the senior Australian cricketer achieved an all-time World Cup record, one which was jointly held by India’s batting great Sachin and former South African captain AB de Villiers.

Warner achieves huge World Cup record in Australia’s 2023 opener

David Warner, who has scored over 6,000 runs in ODIs, has now minted more than 1,000 runs in World Cup matches alone. The cricketer stockpiled 345 of them at the 2015 edition at home, and bludgeoned 647 runs in the subsequent tournament in England.

Taking field against India in Australia’s 2023 World Cup opening match with 992 World Cup runs to his name, Warner soared past the 1000-run mark with ease. He achieved the feat in just his 19th World Cup innings, making him the fastest-ever to do so in the grandest stage of the game.

All-time batting greats Sachin Tendulkar and AB de Villiers held the previous record by scaling 1,000 World Cup runs in their respective 20th innings. Former West Indies and Indian captains, Vivian Richards and Sourav Ganguly, completed their share of 1000 World Cup runs in 21 innings each.
