Pakistan's squad announcement for the upcoming Champions Trophy created quite a buzz, but not for the reasons one would expect. The selectors made a surprising decision by picking just one specialist spinner and loading the 15-member squad with nine batsmen. However, the biggest shock came with the exclusion of all-rounder Aamir Jamal, who was widely expected to make the cut.

Aamir Jamal's Cryptic Instagram Post

Shortly after the squad was announced on January 31, Aamir Jamal took to Instagram to express his disappointment. In a cryptic post, he wrote, "If betraying had a face." This sparked speculation that he was referring to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) selectors, who had reportedly assured him a place in the squad but dropped him at the last moment.

Pakistani journalist Arfa Feroz Zake shared Jamal's Instagram post on social media and revealed that the PCB selectors had initially told Jamal he would be included in the squad. However, they later changed their decision and picked Faheem Ashraf instead. This last-minute switch has raised eyebrows among fans and analysts.

Was Jamal Unlucky To Miss Out?

Jamal has been a regular in Pakistan’s ODI setup recently. He was part of the squad during Pakistan's tours of Australia and Zimbabwe and has been preferred over Faheem Ashraf in recent selections. Although he has played only three ODIs, where he picked up three wickets, his performance in Test cricket has been impressive, especially in challenging Australian conditions.

Jamal's domestic stats also support his case. He has taken 56 wickets in 34 List A matches, showing his potential as a reliable seam-bowling all-rounder. His omission from the Champions Trophy squad in favour of Faheem Ashraf, who last played an ODI in September 2023 and has been out of the squad for over a year, seems like an odd choice.

With the Champions Trophy around the corner, Jamal will have to wait for another opportunity to prove his worth. Meanwhile, the Pakistan squad will prepare for the tournament by playing a Tri-series against South Africa and New Zealand in Karachi and Lahore from February 8-14.
