Iceland Cricket, known for their mischievous takes on world’s cricketing affairs on social media, recently made a huge claim involving Bangladesh team regarding their performance at the 2023 World Cup.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the Iceland governing body wrote that they could have beaten Bangladesh had their team participated at the cricketing carnival in India.

Iceland mocks Bangladesh’s World Cup 2023 performance

Bangladesh cricket team, under evergreen all-rounder Shakib al Hasan, trounced Afghanistan by six wickets and with more than 15 overs to spare in their opening match of the 2023 World Cup. However, the team lost each of their subsequent six fixtures to become the first side to crash out of the semifinals race.

Apart from losing out to defending champions England, hosts India and semifinalists New Zealand, South Africa and Australia, the Bangladesh team also lost to lower-seeded Netherlands in their backend stage of the tournament.

Cricket Iceland took to X (formerly Twitter) and mocked Bangladesh’s World Cup 2023 performance by claiming that despite holding an associate status in international cricket, they could have defeated Shakib Al Hasan and co. during the cricketing carnival. They wrote:

“If we were to play the 1,000th best cricket team in Australia, India, England or Pakistan, we would probably lose quite comfortably. Could we have beaten Bangladesh at the recent CWC? Absolutely!”

Bangladesh eventually secured just two wins from their nine league fixtures by the end of their World Cup run in India. Finishing at number eight on the top points table, i.e., just above Sri Lanka and Netherlands, the team barely managed to qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy set to be played in Pakistan.
