India's former captain Virat Kohli might land in trouble following his heated exchange with Australian opener Sam Konstas during the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground. With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy levelled one-all, India and Australia are taking on each other in a high-voltage contest at the iconic venue in pursuit of an unassailable lead in the series.
Meanwhile, veteran Indian batter Virat Kohli could be penalised by the International Cricket Council for one of his on-field gestures that grabbed the attention of fans worldwide. As Sam Konstas dominated the Indian pacers with sheer audacity, Kohli exchanged a few words with the young batter before shouldering him while charging towards the non-striker's end at the end of an over.
The event escalated quickly, with Usman Khawaja and the on-field umpires stepping up to calm down the players. However, as Kohli aggressively collided with Sam Konstas, he could face some serious charges by the ICC match referee Andy Pycroft.
Will Virat Kohli Be Punished By The ICC?
The match referee could find Virat Kohli guilty of breaching the article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel which relates to “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match)."
Similar incidents have happened in the past and the legendary cricketer won't likely be banned for the final BGT Test at Sydney Cricket Ground. Nevertheless, if he is found guilty of breaching the code of conduct, the referee might deduct a significant percentage of his match fees as a punishment.
Australia Dominate 1st Session Of Boxing Day Test
After captain Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bat first, the Australian openers faced the wrath of Jasprit Bumrah in the initial few overs. However, it took a little time for Sam Konstas to shift gears, as he toyed with the Indian attack, playing some outrageous shots around the park. As of writing, Australia were 89 for one, with Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne batting in the middle.
