Ian Chappell makes a bold statement on Ben Stokes' impending appointment

Australia great Ian Chappell believes that all-rounder Ben Stokes is the only potential candidate to take over as England's new skipper in the red-ball format. However, England could be in big trouble if Ben Stokes refuses to be the Test captain.

After Joe Root resigned as England's Test captain, the side are yet to announce a successor. However, all fingers point to vice-captain Ben Stokes, as he has been the talk of the town for the driving seat in the longest format of the game.

In June, England will be playing their upcoming three-match Test series against New Zealand. This will be the first series for the new skipper and head coach.

Chappell wrote a lengthy column on why he does not consider experienced bowler Stuart Broad or wicketkeeper Jos Buttler to be viable Test captaincy candidates.

"Stuart Broad is an intelligent, well-spoken player, but he should not be considered for the captaincy. He's too old now and has a conservative streak, particularly when it comes to field placements for his own bowling. Jos Buttler is not the first choice Test wicketkeeper, and he will not start in the first choice playing XI." Chappell wrote in his ESPNCricinfo column.

"If Stokes accepts the captaincy, he could benefit from the Parkinson evolution if he has a strong voice at the selection table. In addition, he can help Jamie Overton‌ overcome the fast-bowling shortage by encouraging him in his efforts. Undoubtedly, Overton has been injured several times, but his genuine pace, especially at a young age, has not been adequately maintained on the county circuit."

Chappell concluded by stating that if Stokes is named Test captain, he could be able to convince leg-spinner Matt Parkinson and pacer Jamie Overton to become regulars in the squad.
