Indian spin-bowling all-rounder Shams Mulani is focused on continuing from where he left of in the 2021-22 domestic season.

Mulani, 25, was the leading wicket-taker in the Ranji Trophy 2021-22. In 11 innings, the left-arm orthodox claimed 45 wickets at an average of 16.75 with 6 five-wicket-hauls and a couple of ten-fors.

He didn't stop there. The spin-bowling all-rounder also hammered five half-centuries in 9 innings at an average of 40.12 besides winning the Under-25 CK Nayudu Trophy for Mumbai.

Mulani has kickstarted the 2022/23 season with a bang, scoring 97 against North East Zone for the West Zone in the recent Duleep Trophy quarter-final.

He may have missed out on scoring his maiden First-Class hundred but the 25-year-old ain't bothered one bit as he aims to push the envelope even further.

Shams Mulani speaks on the upcoming season

"I would've been happier if I would've gotten a hundred. But it's a learning process for me as well - as to how to play when you're in the nineties - and this game was a good practice game for us because obviously they had a good bowling attack," he said.

"And just because the wicket wasn't helping much doesn't mean they didn't bowl well. The batters came in and said: 'They were on the money and they were bowling well'. Going into the season, it's a good start, and hopefully this continues - the good form I have with bat and ball. I'll try to repeat what I did last year." he added.

"Last season was phenomenal for me. But that's in the past now, and I want to take a fresh start because the wickets are going to be different and I need to bowl on tough tracks where the ball isn't spinning that much and not doing much," Mulani said.

Mulani toiled away for 26 overs for a solitary wicket with the Kookaburra ball on a surface that provided very little resistance to the spinners.

It was the first time that he bowled with the Kookaburra ball, and while it did get soft after its lacquer weared off,  the left-arm orthodox doesn't want to use it as an excuse as he acknowledged that he needs to adapt better.

"I need to chip in with the wickets [on those pitches] as well. Yes, last season was very good for me and everyone was saying, 'Wow, well done!', but I'm not looking forward to the new season [in terms of wickets only]. Going forward, I'm working on my bowling - on how to bowl long spells with the same amount of revolutions. Let's see if that comes off."

Mulani will be in action when West Zone takes on Central Zone in Coimbatore in the Duleep Trophy semi-final between September 15-18.
