He’s exceeded my expectations already: Brendon McCullum

England Test team coach Brendon McCullum said that skipper Ben Stokes has already exceeded his leadership expectations after the Durham all-rounder led his side to a 3-0 whitewash over reigning Test champions, New Zealand.

The new era of English Test cricket under the duo of Stokes and McCullum got off to a sensational start as the former No.1 ranked side thumped Kane Williamson's men with their aggressive brand of cricket.

Stokes has been the trailblazer with his gung-ho approach, and while he has attracted a bit of criticism for his all-out attacking batsmanship, it has paid off so far, with Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root leading the pack.

Speaking to the media after a sensational 3-0 series win, McCullum said that he always believed that Stokes would make a good captain. While he admitted that there is still a long way to go, the former Kiwi skipper believes that the superstar cricketer has ticked all the boxes.

He also stated that the timing of Stokes getting the Test captaincy was perfect.

"I thought Ben would be good as captain, I did. I think the timing of him getting the captaincy is perfect. I know it's early days, but he's exceeded my expectations already to be honest. I'm aggressive but he's got me covered, which is saying something," said McCullum as quoted by India Today.

One of the hallmarks of a great leader is that whenever he addresses his group of players, he ensures that the message passes through without miscommunication.

And, according to McCullum, Stokes has nailed that too.

"He's been superb, his messaging has been very consistent and very articulate as well. He doesn't speak all the time but when he does speak, it's bang on".

England have chased down 4th innings targets above 275 three times in a row, and what stood out was their carefree, all-out attack approach.

Speaking about the newly adopted approach by England batters, McCullum said:

"The skipper has taken them on a journey, I've tried to fill in the gaps where needed and they've got instant gratification for that change. It doesn't always happen. But that's why those guys are so keen on this style. It gives this team the most amount of satisfaction and for some of the individuals within the group, it's how their talent comes out quickest and best. And it's fun anyway".

It will be interesting to see if the home side will continue with the same approach when they face India in the rescheduled 5th Test, starting this Friday at Edgbaston.
