With Rohit Sharma taking retirement from T20Is, the speculations have begun regarding the new India T20I skipper.

Rohit, who helped India win the T20 World Cup, a couple of days ago, hang his boots alongside Virat Kohli as a new era commenced in Indian cricket.

Currently, India are playing a 5-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, and Shubman Gill is leading the young Indian side. However, his tenure will be short-lived as from the next series onwards, the Men in Blue will have a permanent T20I captain in the form of Hardik Pandya.

Hardik likely to be the new T20I captain

As per a BCCI insider who spoke with OneCricket, the selectors have decided to reward Hardik with the T20I captaincy, after the all-rounder showed exempalary skills in the T20 World Cup.

The BCCI also contemplated regarding the names of Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav, but Hardik is the front-runner at the moment, and will lead the side in the upcoming T2OI series against the home team, Sri Lanka.

The Indian management wants to have a settled core for the 2026 T20 World Cup, and the preparations have begun with the appointment of Hardik, and the announcement will be made as the Sri Lanka series gets closer.

Moreover, Jasprit Bumrah, who was declared the Player of the Tournament in the World Cup, will be appointed Hardik's long-term deputy.
