  • Fuel Shortage In Sri Lanka Hampers Chamika Karunaratnes Cricket Practice Schedule

Fuel shortage in Sri Lanka hampers Chamika Karunaratne’s cricket practice schedule

Sri Lanka’s young bowling all-rounder Chamika Karunaratne is not untouched by the consequences of the extreme economic and political crisis happening in the country. It is no secret that Sri Lanka is facing a huge financial crisis and the citizens are struggling to fulfil their basic needs.

Karunaratne recently made headlines after he was seen queuing up at a petrol station for fuel. The right-arm medium-seamer, who made his debut for the island nation in 2019, is facing extreme difficulties because of the soaring fuel prices.

Karunaratne worried about his performance in LPL and Asia Cup

Due to the scarcity of fuel in the country, the 26-year-old has not been able to attend practice sessions. Elaborating on his plight, Karunaratne stated that the lack of practice can hamper his performance in the upcoming Lanka Premier League 2022 and the Asia Cup.

"Luckily got it after being in a long fuel queue for two days. Due to the huge fuel crisis, I am not able to even go to my cricket practices. Asia Cup is coming and LPL is also scheduled this year. I do not know what will happen.

“I have to go to Colombo and different places for the practices and do attend club season. I am in long queues for petrol. Luckily I got it today, but for ten thousand rupees that will go only a maximum of two to three days,” Karunaratne said while giving an interview to ANI.

The all-rounder thanks India for their support

Sri Lanka have been chosen as the host for the Asia Cup but there are concerns about the country’s political and economic crisis. However, Sri Lanka Cricket is hopeful of hosting the mega-event.

Meanwhile, Karunaratne hailed India’s efforts to help Sri Lanka in its time of need. The 26-year-old expressed his gratitude towards the neighbouring country while being hopeful of better times ahead.

"India is like a brother country & they are helping us a lot. I thank them so much. We have problems. They are supporting us when we are struggling. Thank you so much for that. Thank you for everything. We will get better and better," Karunaratne concluded.
