Former Kiwi captain Daniel Vettori appointed as Australia assistant coach

Cricket Australia on Tuesday (May 24) confirmed that former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has been appointed as assistant coach of the Australia Men's Cricket team.

Vettori will be joining the newly-tinted coaching staff of Australia under the stewardship of Andrew McDonald, the newly appointed head coach.

The legendary left-arm spinner has been appointed as one of the two assistant coaches, with Victorian Andre Borovec confirmed as a part of the Australian coaching staff.

The New Zealander has taken the former role of McDonald, who has now replaced Justin Langer, after the latter's departure post Ashes series last summer.

"I have worked with Daniel previously and could not speak more highly of his approach, work ethic and rapport he brings. His experience and balanced style are well documented. He is a great fit and will bring an enormous amount of knowledge to the team," Andrew McDonald on his experience of sharing the same space with Vettori.

Vettori, who played 113 Tests, 295 ODIs and 34 T20Is for New Zealand, worked with the Australian team during the white-ball series in the recently concluded Pakistan tour.

"I was really impressed with what I saw of the group in Pakistan in the way they approached preparation, planning and playing. It's a very strong and unified group which has the potential to have a very rewarding and hopefully successful period ahead," Vettori said.

Meanwhile, Borovec, 44, will be coaching the Australia-A side on their tour to Sri Lanka before the Test series.

Borovec, who never played any first-class cricket, coached McDonald in Geelong during the last stage of McDonald's career. He previously worked with McDonald at Melbourne Renegades and recently with the Australia white-ball team over the past twelve months.

He also has a close relationship with Aaron Finch, Australia's white-ball captain, having played with him at Geelong.

"Andre has been fantastic for the group when he has been involved as an extremely skilled and experienced high-performance coach," McDonald said.

"He is a great fit culturally and brings the skills to complement our high-performance specialists," he added.

Clint Mckay, former Australia seamer, batting coach Michael Di Venuto and spin coach Sridharan Sriram will help out McDonald during the white ball series against Sri Lanka before Vettori and Borovec start their roles leading into the Test series, starting June 29.
