With the last few days remaining for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 scheduled to be held down under, the former English pair of Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton have picked up their favourites for the tournament.

According to both of them, Australia looks like the most decent side to lift the trophy for the global event that might witness some other teams proving their worth when they take centre stage. However, they did mention that every team has some kind of weakness, but that won't restrict them from being at their best.

Defending champion and hosts Australia will be keen to repeat the feat that saw them lifting the silverware last time in UAE. They also conveyed that South Africa might have an outside side chance to present their case in T20 cricket.

What Hussian and Atherton predicted

It is quite apparent that the tournament could be very open-ended, given the nature of the format, and that is precisely what both the legends echoed. Terming Australia as a dominant force, Atherton said,

"I think it looks a pretty open tournament.

"Every side looks to have some weaknesses. I would say Australia on home turf are probably favourites, but if you think about the last tournament, although they won it, you wouldn't say they were across the board the outstanding side. England smashed them in the group stages.

"It looks quite open to me, and I wonder if there might be a good case for someone like South Africa to come up from the outside."

Conversely, Hussain also spoke about the same thing, also adding that England might come into the race having defeated their rivals the last time they faced.

"Australia look a very, very strong side.

"If you look at the odds, Australia are the favourites, but England just beat them the other day [in a warm-up match], so I'm going for England."

The World Cup will begin with the Sri Lanka-Namibia fixture that will happen on 16th October at Simonds Stadium, Geelong.
