Finally! BCCI to stage six-team Women's IPL from next year onwards

After a long wait, the BCCI officials agreed to stage a six-team Women's IPL from next year onwards, prioritising the existing IPL franchises. Also, outside parties will be invited to bid for the franchises once that option has been exhausted. The board has also cleared the road for IPL Media Rights with ITT (Invitation to Tender), likely to be released on Monday.

Having pressure from other boards and former and current women players, the BCCI has given the nod for a start to six-team Women's IPL. The decision to execute a six-team annual T20 tournament was taken during the Governing Council meeting of the IPL in Mumbai. However, Board President Sourav Ganguly also said that four exhibition games make a return this season after a one-year gap.

The most likely venue for the women's exhibitions games is Pune. The BCCI, which has been criticised in the last few years for not having plans for the Women's IPL, will need AGM's approval to kickstart the cash-rich league next season.

"The full-fledged women's IPL has to be approved by the AGM. Hopefully, we plan to start it by next year," BCCI president Sourav Ganguly told reporters after the IPL GC meeting on Friday. The Governing Council also discussed the issue of IPL media rights for the 2023-2027 cycle. "The tender will be out soon," said a Governing Council member.

Adding further, IPL chairman Brijesh Patel also cleared the cloud that there will be four matches for the three women teams around men's IPL play-offs this season, most likely in Ahmedabad. It was not organised last year. According to the chairman, there would be five or six teams in the Women's IPL, but again that would need the approval of the General Body.

Moreover, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) also focuses on similar plans like CWI came up with. Cricket Australia's Women's Big Bash League (WBBL), England and Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) Women's Hundred and New Zealand Cricket's Women's Super-Smash are some of the prominent white-ball franchise tournaments for women's cricket.\

Crucial points of the meeting:

-BCCI proposes to start a six-team women's IPL in 2023.

-The first choice is to be given to existing franchises post to which other parties are invited.

-At least three franchises confirmed interest in buying teams.

-Women's T20 challenge is set to take place in late May this year.

'There is every chance that Rishabh could be international captain' : Ricky Ponting

Former Australian captain and Delhi Capitals' head coach Ricky Ponting has opined that Rishabh Pant will benefit from captaining in a high-pressure tournament like the Indian Premier League (IPL). Also, the world-cup winning Aussie does not doubt that the charismatic wicketkeeper-batsman will make for an excellent international captain shortly. Pant made his captaincy debut for the Capitals last season after Shreyas Iyer got ruled out due to injury. He led his side to the Playoffs, where the Capitals lost back-to-back Qualifiers to CSK and KKR. In an exclusive interview with Cricbuzz, Ponting said: "With some experience in a role like this in such a high-pressure tournament like the IPL, you know, I've got no doubt in years to come there is every chance that Rishabh could be international captain. No doubt about it" The former Aussie skipper went on to heap praise on Pant for his constant evolution as a cricketer and as a person during his stay at the Delhi Capitals. He added: "This is my fifth season now here and the evolution of Rishabh as a player and as a person has been quite dramatic. The last couple of years with some more responsibility in and around the Indian team, obviously captaining Delhi Capitals last season, there's been a lot of learning experiences for him," Ponting stated that Pant could emulate the same kind of success that Rohit Sharma has achieved at the Mumbai Indians. ‘Punter’ was the head coach of the Mumbai Indians when a young Rohit led them to their maiden IPL title way back in 2013. And, as someone who has seen the rise of Rohit very closely, Ponting sees the same qualities in Pant, which a young Rohit had at the time. "I haven't thought about that actually. But I think they are actually quite similar. When Rohit took over at Mumbai, he was quite a young man as well and he just sort of started out in his international career. He would probably be about 23-24, similar age to what Rishabh over here," Ponting concluded. Pant's Delhi Capitals side will open their campaign against Rohit's Mumbai Indians on March 27.

Faf du Plessis is an able captain, someone I have a lot of respect for: Virat Kohli

Former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli is all set to play under the captaincy of Faf du Plessis in the 2022 edition of Indian Premier League (IPL). After taking over from Daniel Vettori in 2014, Kohli led the Challengers until the 2021 edition. After he stepped down, RCB appointed Du Plessis as their skipper after bagging the former South Africa skipper for INR 7 crore in the mega-auctions. The 33-year-old, who captained RCB to the final of the 2016 IPL, lauded Du Plessis for his style of captaincy. The Delhi-born, who's also the all-time leading run-scorer in the IPL, said that the RCB players have shown a lot of respect towards Du Plessis, who came to the Bengaluru-based franchise from Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Kohli, who's there with RCB since the inaugural edition back in 2008, put forth his opinions on the Proteas veteran while speaking on the RCB official website. We got to make a plan around his vision: Virat Kohli on Faf du Plessis "He is a very able captain, someone that I have a lot of respect for. Even as an opposition captain, [he is] someone that I always admired in the way he went about things, [and] in the way he went about, [he] got his team to rally around him. That is the most important thing for any skipper," Kohli commented, according to the RCB website. "Even here you can see he is at ease with everyone in the squad, the whole environment in general. And people have a sense of respect for him where if he is making plans or talking about stuff, people are saying 'hold on, let's get into it, listen to it, we got to make a plan around his vision'," he added. RCB is set to start their campaign in IPL 2022 against the Punjab Kings (PBKS), led by Mayank Agarwal, on Sunday, March 27, at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai. The Challengers have reached the IPL final thrice but are yet to get their hands on the coveted trophy. It remains to be seen if du Plessis' can turn the team's fortunes around.
