Day 2 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will see a double-header. In the first game, Delhi Capitals (DC) and Mumbai Indians (MI) will lock horns at Brabourne Stadium on March 27.
This will be the first match of the 2022 season for both teams, and they will aim to start their campaign on a high.
The Capitals, who have enjoyed decent success in the last few editions, reaching the playoffs every year since 2019, will now head into the competition with an almost revamped squad.
Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant will continue to lead the team. Along with their skipper, the franchise picked three retentions in the form of Axar Patel, Anrich Nortje and Prithvi Shaw. While Axar and Shaw will bolster the bowling and batting department, Nortje is returning after an injury, and his fitness remains to be seen.
For the Capitals, the worry resides in their foreign players, who will miss out on the first few games of the tournament. David Warner and Mitchell Marsh would have made their starting XI had they been available, but their absence forces DC to opt for the backup options.
Compared to the last season, Delhi's bowling department looks thin on paper. Nortje's fitness further adds to their woes.
On the other hand, the Mumbai Indians went through a horrendous phase last year. First, the slow and sluggish pitches of Chennai and then in UAE proved to be a cause for their batters' struggle.
Although MI now have an advantage of playing in the home conditions, their squad for the season surprisingly does not make them one of the favourites. The franchise retained Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav and Kieron Pollard while shelling out most of their purse on Ishan Khan, Tim David, and Jofra Archer in the auction.
Mumbai's top-order boasts of quality, but the middle-order batters lack experience, which could hurt them. There would be no Pandya brothers this time around, and Mumbai would need someone else to step up as a finisher. Suryakumar Yadav will also not feature in the first match as he is yet to recover from an injury.
With Jofra Archer not available for the entire season, Mumbai Indians rely heavily on Jasprit Bumrah. However, their spin attack remains an issue and would need either Murugan Ashwin or Mayank Markande to act as a solution.

Pitch Report
The pitch of Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai, generally behaves as an even surface with some help on offer for both batters and bowlers. However, while spinners can also generate turn off the surface, dew in the second innings reduces the help for them.
