Essex fined £500,000 for former chairman's racist remarks

The England and Wales Cricket Board's discipline commission has fined the Essex County Cricket Club a lump sum amount of £500,000 this week for the racist remarks of the club's former chairperson, John Faragher.

The commission found Faragher guilty of using the phrase 'ni**er in the woodpile' at a board meeting back in February 2017, and therefore, it has fined the club this huge amount.

To note, the word is used as a racist slur against African Americans. The commission considered this offence a severe one and hence took the step of imposing the fine on the club. Although the accused is yet to accept his guilt for making a comment, the club has admitted to the phrase's usage in that meeting in front of the commission.

These kinds of infamous incidents have tarnished the image of the ECB from time to time on the global level.

Many famous English cricketers, including the likes of Michael Vaughan, have been accused of making racist comments towards their teammates belonging to other ethnic groups, which has compelled the ECB to be stricter in its approach while dealing with this deep-rooted issue.

As far as this latest case is concerned, Essex CCC is asked to pay the fine amount, as the English board vigorously vows to eradicate racism from the grassroots level.
