On Sunday, October 5, India women and Pakistan women are all set to lock horns against each other in the Women's ODI World Cup in Colombo. Tensions are expected to flare in the upcoming clash because of the recent tensions between the two countries.
Notably, for the unversed, India and Pakistan were on the brink of a major war in May 2025, which led to a social media battle as well. The effect of recent tensions was visible during the Asia Cup 2025, where more than 20 controversies occurred during the three India vs Pakistan games within a span of two weeks.
India refused to shake hands with Pakistan, which led to Haris Rauf and Sahibzada Farhan's objectionable and baseless gestures. Eventually, the ACC chief, Mohsin Naqvi, too fled to his hometown with the trophy.
India media manager stops PAK reporter from bringing up Asia Cup
In the recent events, ahead of the women's clash, bowling coach Avishkar Salvi addressed the media in Harmanpreet Kaur's absence, and the first question he was asked was by a Pakistani reporter.
Notably, the reporter confronted Salvi about the controversies during the Asia Cup and asked whether the same would be seen in the women's game. Before the bowling coach could answer, the media manager intervened and stopped the reporter from asking further and also told Salvi not to respond.
“I had a question for the Indian captain, but since you’re here, I’ll ask you instead. We’ve seen that the women’s teams of both Pakistan and India share good camaraderie, at least leading up to this World Cup. So, do you think the bitterness from the Asia Cup might carry over to the women’s teams as well?” the journalist asked as reported by Hindustan Times.
“Hi, just a reminder — we said we wouldn’t be taking that first question, so let’s move on to the next one,” she said.
Indian women asked not to shake hands with Pakistani women
Meanwhile, there are reports that the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side is expected to follow Suryakumar Yadav's footsteps and will stay away from shaking hands with the Fatima Sana-led side to honour the Indian army and their bravery during Operation sindoor.
There is no confirmation regarding the stance, but most likely the two teams will stay apart from each other, which might also result in flared tempers.
