Australian opener David Warner rained down 163 blistering runs against Pakistan in their recent World Cup 2023 standoff in Bengaluru. The legendary opener launched nine sixes and 14 boundaries during his 124-ball thunderous stay at the crease, which also marked his 21st ODI century.

Warner’s Bengaluru epic also turned out to be his fifth hundred at the World Cup stage, which brought him to levelling terms with all-time great and former captain Ricky Ponting for a huge Australian record.

David Warner made his World Cup debut during the 2015 edition of the tournament. The cricketer celebrated his maiden grand stage occasion by lifting the coveted trophy under Michael Clarke’s leadership. Warner also played the 2019 World Cup in England where he emerged as the second highest run-scorer behind Rohit Sharma.

The cricketer, who blasted 178 against Afghanistan in 2015, secured three more hundreds in the 2019 edition to take his World Cup century tally to four. Warner’s latest 163-run effort against Pakistan marked his fifth World Cup ton, which brought him on levelling terms with Ricky Ponting.

The former Australian skipper had also registered five World Cup centuries across five different editions from 1996 to 2011. Among all Australian cricketers, Warner and Ponting lead the race as World Cup’s highest century makers.

Former batter Mark Waugh piled up four in his career to be placed at second on the list, while explosive openers Aaron Finch and Matthew Hayden unleashed three tons each during their playing days.

At 37 years of age, the ongoing 2023 event in India might well turn out to be the final World Cup outing for Warner. If the dashing opening batsman manages to secure one more triple-figure score during the remaining stages of the tournament, he will surpass Ricky Ponting to become Australia’s all-time leading century-maker at the grandest stage of the sport.
