David Warner discloses the real reason behind his leadership ban

David Warner was one of the three architects convicted for Australia’s infamous sandpaper-gate of 2018. The cricketer was handed a 12-month suspension from Cricket Australia (CA) and was also imposed a lifetime leadership ban within the Australian cricketing fraternity.

Notably, the opening batsman has now revealed that his involvement in 2018’s Cape Town fiasco was not the real reason he was stripped from captaincy.

Warner cites off-field conflicts as reason for his leadership ban

Warner recently stated that the real reason behind his leadership ban was the conflict between players and CA over a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in 2017. While speaking on Kayo Sports, he said:

“Unfortunately, a lot of the events before 2018 were with the board. The MOU stuff and all that. Things got over and above, in terms of the Cape Town stuff. There was more to it. I think that’s where my decision, the penalty that was handed down was more stuff happening before that.”

The cricketer has also reaffirmed his desire to lead Australia, at least in ODIs, again. Long-time ODI captain Aaron Finch recently retired from the format, leaving the slot open.

Australia's coach Andrew McDonald said that the cricket board and team management will announce their new skipper only after the T20 World Cup next month. However, Finch himself has backed Warner to take over his role, despite the latter’s leadership punishment.
