Daryl Mitchell surpasses Michael Hussey with Bradman-esque ODI beginning

New Zealand batsman Daryl Mitchell compiled 538 runs across three Tests against England back in June. His ‘Player of the Series’ special launched a successful reboot to his Test career, one which saw him score just 403 runs in the preceding nine matches he played for his country.

The 31-year-old now seems to be eyeing ODI supremacy, having dropped a match-winning ton and a sparkling half-century across his three 50-overs innings already

Daryl Mitchell yet to be dismissed since ODI debut

The lanky New Zealand batter made his ODI debut against Bangladesh at Dunedin back in March 2021. While he did not get to bat in his maiden outing, he did wield his run-scoring weapon in each of his three subsequent appearances.

The right-hander dropped a 6-ball 12* against Bangladesh in his first-ever ODI innings, merely three days after he made his debut in the format. In the next game, he hammered an unbeaten 100 against the likes of Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain and Taskin Ahmed, all while elevating his side from 120-4 to 318-6.

Mitchell had to wait 16 months to receive his next ODI cap, during his country’s July 2022 trip to Scotland. In the one-off game against the hosts, the cricketer punched out an unbeaten 74 to help his side pull off a 300-plus heist in the run-chase.

So far, the Kiwi batter has stockpiled 186 runs across three ODI innings without being dismissed. In doing so, he has overtaken Australian legend Michael Hussey to score most runs without a dismissal since ODI debut.

Hussey aggregated 145 unbeaten runs across his first five ODI innings, all between 2004 and early 2005.
