Indian women’s cricket team struck silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side faced Australia in the final, where they fell nine runs short in a thriller.

The skipper herself punched out a rebellious 65 in the run-chase, after the ‘Women in Blue’ had lost both their openers early on in the innings. Boundaries dried up after Kaur’s dismissal and a mini batting collapse enabled Australia to claim the gold medal.

While the cricketing fraternity lavished praise on the team for earning a silver, former men’s captain Mohammad Azharuddin came down heavy on the side for their batting approach in the run-chase.

The legendary batsman took to Twitter and lambasted Harmanpreet Kaur and co. for losing out on gold. On the microblogging site, he wrote:

Australia had won the toss and opted to bat first. Indian speedster Renuka Singh trapped Australian opener Alyssa Healy in front within the third over to get rid of India’s 2020 T20I World Cup demons early.

Beth Mooney struck a 41-ball 61 while skipper Meg Lanning provided comfort to Australia with a rapid 36 as they mounted a stiff 161-8 off their 20 overs.

India’s response, despite losing openers early, looked set to overhaul the target courtesy of captain Kaur’s 43-ball 65. However, her dismissal triggered a batting collapse and a nine-run defeat in the final over.
