The Chennai Super Kings (CSK), five-time IPL champions, have added a fresh tactical edge to their backroom staff ahead of the 2025 season, appointing former India all-rounder Sridharan Sriram as their new assistant bowling coach.
The franchise made the announcement official on Monday, welcoming the Chennai-born strategist into Stephen Fleming’s coaching setup with a vibrant social media post that celebrated his homecoming.
Homecoming for Sriram
Sriram, 49, returns to his roots with a wealth of global experience. A product of Chennai’s cricketing ecosystem, he began his journey on the iconic Chepauk grounds before transitioning into a decorated coaching career.
The Super Kings’ post hailed his appointment, stating, “Say Yellove to our assistant bowling Coach Sriram Sridharan! Brought up from the tracks of Chepauk to a packed portfolio of coaching tenures in Australia and Bangladesh, he embarks on this new journey with the pride.”
Sridharan Sriram's Career
While Sriram’s international playing career was brief—8 ODIs for India with 9 wickets and 81 runs—his post-retirement contributions have been monumental. Known for his sharp cricketing intellect, he carved a niche as a spin-bowling specialist and batting strategist. His coaching resume sparkles with high-profile roles.
As a spin consultant, he fine-tuned Nathan Lyon and Adam Zampa’s craft during critical subcontinent tours, including the 2017 Test series in India. Helmed the technical consultancy for the Tigers during the T20 World Cup, aiding their rise as spin-heavy contenders.
Worked with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Delhi Capitals (formerly Daredevils), sharpening young talents like Yuzvendra Chahal and Axar Patel.
CSK’s Strategic Play for IPL 2025
Sriram joins a revamped coaching staff under head coach Stephen Fleming, with Eric Simons taking charge as the primary bowling coach. His arrival signals CSK’s intent to fortify their spin department, a critical weapon at their spin-friendly Chepauk fortress. The move also aligns with the franchise’s ethos of blending local expertise with global vision.
Notably, CSK will kick off their IPL 2025 quest on March 23 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, locking horns with the Mumbai Indians in a blockbuster clash. With Sriram’s spin wizardry and Simons’ pace insights, the Super Kings’ revamped coaching arsenal could prove decisive in their hunt for a record sixth title.
