CPL 2021 | TKR vs BR: Isuru Udana, Kieron Pollard get Trinbago back on track

Trinbago Knight Riders’ captain Kieron Pollard blew a flying kiss after he smacked one out of the park for a maximum off Thisara Perera in the 17th over to complete his fifty against Barbados Royals in St Lucia on Saturday.

The right-hander struck a boundary on the very next delivery to complete a comprehensive win for TKR by 6 wickets as they chased down a target of 123 runs with more than three overs to spare.

Trinbago needed to get the momentum back after they suffered a defeat in the first match of the competition and Pollard along with Denesh Ramdin showed their skills against the Royals to get the side back on track.

The Knight Riders had some early hiccups after they were reduced to 18/3 and were left tottering at 38/4 in 8th over when skipper Pollard and wicket-keeper batsman Ramdin joined hands and steadied the ship for the side.

The two batsmen made sure that there were no further dismissals and put up an unbeaten stand of 87 runs for the fifth wicket to see the side home.

But the game totally changed in the 15th over when Jason Holder took the ball in his hands. He had only given 8 runs in the first three overs that he had bowled but what unleashed next was simply disappointing for his side and left Holder in disarray.

He was hit for three sixes in his final over and ended up giving away 22 runs in total which also included a couple of no-balls to eventually return with figures of 0/30 in 4 overs.

Pollard (58*) and Ramdin (29*) then took less than two overs to go over the line and hand the side its first win of the season.

Mohammad Amir was the pick of the bowlers for Barbados after he scalped a three-for at the cost of 21 runs in 4 overs while Oshane Thomas too had an impressive day at the office as he returned with figures of 1/14 in 4 overs.

Earlier in the day, it was Isuru Udana show who ripped through the Barbados batting line up and bagged a five-wicket haul during the course. The Royals had a decent start to the proceedings as the openers Glenn Philips and Charles put up 29 runs for the first wicket.

But Charles’ departure broke the shackles and Barbados kept losing wickets at regular intervals to get bundled out for 122 in the final over.

However, Charles' wicket was a controversial one as the replays showed that it came off the shoulder and not the bat while the batter went for a hook on a short delivery from the bowler. But he was eventually given out and had to walk back into the hut.

Udana’s fifer included the wickets of Philips, Charles, captain Holder, Azam Khan and Thisara Perera.

Azam top-scored for Barbados with a 21-ball 30 that included a couple of sixes and as many boundaries but the middle-order failed to fire and the side was pushed on the backfoot.

Apart from Udana, Ravi Rampaul picked up two wickets while Hosein and Narine took one wicket apiece.

Barbados captain Holder expressed his disappointment and said that the players need to take up the responsibility.

“We didn't give ourself a fair chance (with that kind of a score). Guys need to take responsibility. We have had two tough games so far. It's a tricky situation, trying to defend 120 is difficult,” he said after the match.

TKR skipper Pollard admitted that the side didn’t really have a good start to the competition but lauded the efforts made by Ramdin and Udana to eventually give them the first win.

“Wasn't a great start for us yesterday. Even today it wasn't a great start, but these things happen,” he said.

“We were in a spot of bother today, but Ramdin played well. Shows the experience we have in this TKR line-up. I think Udana's come here to make a statement. He got those early wickets and we were able to support him at the backend,” Pollard added.

The Royals will now face Jamaica Tallawahs while TKR will be up against Saint Lucia Kings on Sunday.

CPL 2021 | Russell and Migael Pretorius help Tallawahs register biggest victory in CPL history

It was not a nice day, to begin with for the renamed St. Lucia kings in their very first match of the Caribbean Premier League 2021 and it surely wasn’t a nice day to end with as they were thrashed by the Jamaica Tallwahs and consequently suffered the biggest defeat in the history of the league’s nine-year history. After conceding 255 with the ball, the Kings were bundled out for 135 even as Tim David scored 56 at the strike rate of 200. The Tallawahs won by 120 runs, which is the biggest win by a margin of runs in the history of the CPL. The previous biggest defeat was in the name of the Tallwahs at the hands of St Kitts and Nevis Patriots which came in 2015 at this very ground. The Tallawahs were then defeated by 119 runs, getting bowled out for 80, chasing 200. Chasing a huge total, Rahkeem Cornwall tried to give the Kings a great start hitting the first two balls for a four and a six. However, his stay was short-lived as the bouncer from Migael Pretorius was enough to find him in the deep where he was caught by skipper Andre Russell. That wicket started the flurry of wickets and it just kept ongoing. There was no partnership of substance till the fall of the sixth wicket in the form of Keemo Paul. Wahab Riaz and David then tried to reduce the margin of loss as much as possible as the win had gotten out of the equation by that time with 200 needed off 15 overs at more than 14 runs per over. The duo added 53 runs in just 28 balls and looked like getting near to the 150-180 total to avoid humiliation. But it wasn’t to be as David became Pretorius’ fourth dismissal having gotten the wickets Patriots skipper Faf du Plessis and Roston chase along with Cornwall already. The end was brought about soon as leg spinner Imran Khan helped himself to three quick wickets. Earlier in the morning, thanks to brilliant batting by Kennar Lewis, Chadwick Walton and Haier Ali at the start of the innings and a superb 14 ball fifty by Dre Russ at the end made sure that Tallawahs recorded the second-highest team total in the history of the league. Russell’s 14 ball fifty also became the fastest fifty in CPL’s history. Courtesy that, the 33-year-old was awarded Man of the match. With this win, the Tallwahs got to the top of the table thanks to their better net runs rate. They will now face Barbados Royals in their next game on August 29 The Kings will take on Trinbago Knight Riders on the same day as well.

CPL 2021 | GAW vs SNP: Looking to continue the momentum, Pooran’s team faces Bravo and Co.

Nicholas Pooran’s side Guyana Amazon Warriors would be looking to convert their brilliant start against defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders when they face Dwayne Bravo led St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots, who too started on a winning note, defeating Barbados Royals. The two teams face each other in the fifth match of Caribbean Premier League 2021 at Warner Park in Basseterre. Even though the competition is being held at a neutral venue, but since the Patriots are a team from St. Kitts and Nevis, they would be getting support from whatever limited crowd comes in after verifying their Covid vaccination certificate at the entry gates of the stadium. Thus the Bravo led team would look to convert that support into inspiration and try and win two on a trot. While Sherfane Rutherford was the hero for the home team with the bat in the last game along with captain Dwayne Bravo, Sheldon Cottrell and Dominic Drakes, the two quicks came good with the ball and the team would want them to continue. Along with that, the team would also like the Universe Boss Chris Gayle to get into the groove as soon as possible. The Warriors on the other hand almost had a complete match blanking the title favourites and holder Knight Riders. Shimron Hetmyer was brilliant with the bat and there was a good contribution from Odean Smith as well. Smith was particularly great with the ball as well to brandish hopes for a great all-around season going ahead. So two teams in good spirits and high on confidence will face each other in what would turn out to be the first loss for one of the two in the tournament. Guyana Amazon Warriors vs St Kitts and Nevis Patriots Match Number: 05 Date and Time: August 28, 2021, 07:30 pm IST, 10:00 am Local, 02:00 pm GMT Venue: Warner Park, Basseterre Broadcast: Star Sports Live Stream: Fancode Pitch Report The pitch has been a high scoring venue so far as seen in the last three games with the third game between the Tallawahs and Kings being a fest of sixes. Thus, with freshness intact, it is expected that pitches at the ground would remain the same as far as at least the first week’s competition is concerned. Weather Forecast and Toss The weather at Warner Park will remain hot and humid with humidity being as high as 74%. The temperatures would remain in the lower thirties with the moderate wind blowing from east to northeast and thus helping the bowlers early on in the morning. A captain winning the toss would look to bowl first without any doubt. CPL 2021 | Russell’s record 14-ball 50 propels Jamaica Tallawahs to second - highest CPL total

It was a storm in Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis, but not the usual one that the people are aware of, rather, it was a storm of sixes brought on by the batters of Jamaica Tallawahs in their season opener clash against Saint Lucia Kings at the Warner Park in the Caribbean Premier League 2021. The Tallawahs scored 255/5, which is the second-highest total and only 12 runs less than the Trinbago Knight Riders score of 267, incidentally against the Tallawahs themselves in 2019. Andre Russell was the man of the moment for the team from Jamiac as he registered the fastest CPL fifty in history by getting to it only 14 balls and broke JP Duminy’s record of scoring a fifty in just 15 balls which he had achieved in 2019 batting against Trinbago Knight Riders playing for Barbados Tridents. Russell in his 14 ball innings hit three fours and four sixes including four in the 19th and two in the 20th over. It is amazing how he only arrived at the crease with just 16 legal deliveries remaining and was still able to get to the fifty. With this fifty, he equalled his record for a 14 ball fifty that he had achieved playing for Colombo Kings in the Lankan Premier League in 2020. He is the only batter to have scored two 14 ball fifties. In total, the Tallwahs hit 17 sixes which also equalled the record for most sixes in an innings achieved by the Knight Riders in the very match in which they achieved the record for the highest total. Apart from Russell, Kennar Lewis, Chadwick Walton and Haider Ali got into the high 40s, but couldn’t get to a 50. Obed McCoy was the most successful of the Kings’ bowlers, finishing with figures of 3/52 in his four overs.

Wahab Riaz predicts India's defeat against Pakistan in ICC World T20

Pakistan pacer Wahab Riaz has expressed a bullish attitude about the prospect of Pakistan in the upcoming World T20 and also in the game against their arch-rivals India. Notably, Pakistan have not defeated India in a world cup game and Riaz said that the record can be broke in the next encounter between the sides provided the men in green play at their potential”. He pointed out the fickle nature of T20 cricket where games can change in a matter of minutes and said that Pakistan can certainly beat India if they get their acts together. “They definitely have the ability to achieve that result. If Pakistan plays to its potential, then they can beat any team in the world including India. Twenty20 cricket is such a format that the whole match can turn in the space of a few balls or even one incident and the Pakistan versus India match will be no different. If Pakistan play at their best, they can certainly beat India,” Wahab said to PakPasson.net. About the prospect of his country winning the competition for the second time, Riaz said that the conditions in the UAE will favour Pakistan as they have played a lot of their cricket there. He rated Pakistan as “leading contenders” to lif the trophy later this year. “Given the conditions and where it’s being held, I believe Pakistan has a very good chance of winning the tournament. Pakistan has played a lot of cricket in UAE, and this gives them a very good chance to win the competition. They’ll be familiar with the conditions, and they’ll know what the ball will do. If they can utilise the conditions and use them to their advantage, then there is no reason why they can’t be considered amongst the leading contenders for the title,” he added. Riaz has had a brilliant performance against India in the ICC ODI World Cup 2011 semi-finals but has gone out of the selection radar owing to poor and inconsistent performances. However, he said that the call of selecting him lies in the hands of selectors and his job is limited to perform and prove what he is “capable of”. He refused to give in to his critics’ calls and said that his performance is as good as it has been and that the selection call is beyond his control. “If it was up to me, then yes you will. But it’s up to the selectors who they want included in the side and who they think will provide the maximum utility. As a player, all you can do is to perform and that’s what my aim is and that’s what I am doing around the world. Lately I’ve played in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), and I have showed what I am capable of, and I don’t think I have to prove it again and again. Regardless of what they feel, I am performing well wherever I am getting a chance to play. So, let’s see what the selectors have in mind and whether they want me to be a part of future squads is totally up to them,” he concluded. Riaz last played for Pakistan in December last year and his inconsistency with the ball led to the departure from the side.
