It was not a nice day, to begin with for the renamed St. Lucia kings in their very first match of the Caribbean Premier League 2021 and it surely wasn’t a nice day to end with as they were thrashed by the Jamaica Tallwahs and consequently suffered the biggest defeat in the history of the league’s nine-year history. After conceding 255 with the ball, the Kings were bundled out for 135 even as Tim David scored 56 at the strike rate of 200.

The Tallawahs won by 120 runs, which is the biggest win by a margin of runs in the history of the CPL. The previous biggest defeat was in the name of the Tallwahs at the hands of St Kitts and Nevis Patriots which came in 2015 at this very ground. The Tallawahs were then defeated by 119 runs, getting bowled out for 80, chasing 200.

Chasing a huge total, Rahkeem Cornwall tried to give the Kings a great start hitting the first two balls for a four and a six. However, his stay was short-lived as the bouncer from Migael Pretorius was enough to find him in the deep where he was caught by skipper Andre Russell. That wicket started the flurry of wickets and it just kept ongoing. There was no partnership of substance till the fall of the sixth wicket in the form of Keemo Paul.

Wahab Riaz and David then tried to reduce the margin of loss as much as possible as the win had gotten out of the equation by that time with 200 needed off 15 overs at more than 14 runs per over.

The duo added 53 runs in just 28 balls and looked like getting near to the 150-180 total to avoid humiliation. But it wasn’t to be as David became Pretorius’ fourth dismissal having gotten the wickets Patriots skipper Faf du Plessis and Roston chase along with Cornwall already. The end was brought about soon as leg spinner Imran Khan helped himself to three quick wickets.

CPL 2021 | Russell’s record 14-ball 50 propels Jamaica Tallawahs to second - highest CPL total

It was a storm in Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis, but not the usual one that the people are aware of, rather, it was a storm of sixes brought on by the batters of Jamaica Tallawahs in their season opener clash against Saint Lucia Kings at the Warner Park in the Caribbean Premier League 2021. The Tallawahs scored 255/5, which is the second-highest total and only 12 runs less than the Trinbago Knight Riders score of 267, incidentally against the Tallawahs themselves in 2019. Andre Russell was the man of the moment for the team from Jamiac as he registered the fastest CPL fifty in history by getting to it only 14 balls and broke JP Duminy’s record of scoring a fifty in just 15 balls which he had achieved in 2019 batting against Trinbago Knight Riders playing for Barbados Tridents. Russell in his 14 ball innings hit three fours and four sixes including four in the 19th and two in the 20th over. It is amazing how he only arrived at the crease with just 16 legal deliveries remaining and was still able to get to the fifty. With this fifty, he equalled his record for a 14 ball fifty that he had achieved playing for Colombo Kings in the Lankan Premier League in 2020. He is the only batter to have scored two 14 ball fifties. In total, the Tallwahs hit 17 sixes which also equalled the record for most sixes in an innings achieved by the Knight Riders in the very match in which they achieved the record for the highest total. Apart from Russell, Kennar Lewis, Chadwick Walton and Haider Ali got into the high 40s, but couldn’t get to a 50. Obed McCoy was the most successful of the Kings’ bowlers, finishing with figures of 3/52 in his four overs.

Wahab Riaz predicts India's defeat against Pakistan in ICC World T20

Pakistan pacer Wahab Riaz has expressed a bullish attitude about the prospect of Pakistan in the upcoming World T20 and also in the game against their arch-rivals India. Notably, Pakistan have not defeated India in a world cup game and Riaz said that the record can be broke in the next encounter between the sides provided the men in green play at their potential”. He pointed out the fickle nature of T20 cricket where games can change in a matter of minutes and said that Pakistan can certainly beat India if they get their acts together. “They definitely have the ability to achieve that result. If Pakistan plays to its potential, then they can beat any team in the world including India. Twenty20 cricket is such a format that the whole match can turn in the space of a few balls or even one incident and the Pakistan versus India match will be no different. About the prospect of his country winning the competition for the second time, Riaz said that the conditions in the UAE will favour Pakistan as they have played a lot of their cricket there. He rated Pakistan as “leading contenders” to lif the trophy later this year. “Given the conditions and where it’s being held, I believe Pakistan has a very good chance of winning the tournament. Pakistan has played a lot of cricket in UAE, and this gives them a very good chance to win the competition. They’ll be familiar with the conditions, and they’ll know what the ball will do. If they can utilise the conditions and use them to their advantage, then there is no reason why they can’t be considered amongst the leading contenders for the title,” he added. Riaz has had a brilliant performance against India in the ICC ODI World Cup 2011 semi-finals but has gone out of the selection radar owing to poor and inconsistent performances. However, he said that the call of selecting him lies in the hands of selectors and his job is limited to perform and prove what he is “capable of”. He refused to give in to his critics’ calls and said that his performance is as good as it has been and that the selection call is beyond his control. “If it was up to me, then yes you will. But it’s up to the selectors who they want included in the side and who they think will provide the maximum utility. As a player, all you can do is to perform and that’s what my aim is and that’s what I am doing around the world. Lately I’ve played in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), and I have showed what I am capable of, and I don’t think I have to prove it again and again.
