CPL 2021 | GAW vs SNP: Looking to continue the momentum, Pooran’s team faces Bravo and Co.

Nicholas Pooran’s side Guyana Amazon Warriors would be looking to convert their brilliant start against defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders when they face Dwayne Bravo led St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots, who too started on a winning note, defeating Barbados Royals. The two teams face each other in the fifth match of Caribbean Premier League 2021 at Warner Park in Basseterre. 

Even though the competition is being held at a neutral venue, but since the Patriots are a team from St. Kitts and Nevis, they would be getting support from whatever limited crowd comes in after verifying their Covid vaccination certificate at the entry gates of the stadium. Thus the Bravo led team would look to convert that support into inspiration and try and win two on a trot. 

While Sherfane Rutherford was the hero for the home team with the bat in the last game along with captain Dwayne Bravo, Sheldon Cottrell and Dominic Drakes, the two quicks came good with the ball and the team would want them to continue. Along with that, the team would also like the Universe Boss Chris Gayle to get into the groove as soon as possible. 

The Warriors on the other hand almost had a complete match blanking the title favourites and holder Knight Riders. Shimron Hetmyer was brilliant with the bat and there was a good contribution from Odean Smith as well. Smith was particularly great with the ball as well to brandish hopes for a great all-around season going ahead. 

So two teams in good spirits and high on confidence will face each other in what would turn out to be the first loss for one of the two in the tournament.

CPL 2021 | Russell’s record 14-ball 50 propels Jamaica Tallawahs to second - highest CPL total

It was a storm in Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis, but not the usual one that the people are aware of, rather, it was a storm of sixes brought on by the batters of Jamaica Tallawahs in their season opener clash against Saint Lucia Kings at the Warner Park in the Caribbean Premier League 2021. The Tallawahs scored 255/5, which is the second-highest total and only 12 runs less than the Trinbago Knight Riders score of 267, incidentally against the Tallawahs themselves in 2019. Andre Russell was the man of the moment for the team from Jamiac as he registered the fastest CPL fifty in history by getting to it only 14 balls and broke JP Duminy’s record of scoring a fifty in just 15 balls which he had achieved in 2019 batting against Trinbago Knight Riders playing for Barbados Tridents. Russell in his 14 ball innings hit three fours and four sixes including four in the 19th and two in the 20th over. It is amazing how he only arrived at the crease with just 16 legal deliveries remaining and was still able to get to the fifty. With this fifty, he equalled his record for a 14 ball fifty that he had achieved playing for Colombo Kings in the Lankan Premier League in 2020. He is the only batter to have scored two 14 ball fifties. In total, the Tallwahs hit 17 sixes which also equalled the record for most sixes in an innings achieved by the Knight Riders in the very match in which they achieved the record for the highest total. Apart from Russell, Kennar Lewis, Chadwick Walton and Haider Ali got into the high 40s, but couldn’t get to a 50. Obed McCoy was the most successful of the Kings’ bowlers, finishing with figures of 3/52 in his four overs.

Wahab Riaz predicts India's defeat against Pakistan in ICC World T20

Pakistan pacer Wahab Riaz has expressed a bullish attitude about the prospect of Pakistan in the upcoming World T20 and also in the game against their arch-rivals India. Notably, Pakistan have not defeated India in a world cup game and Riaz said that the record can be broke in the next encounter between the sides provided the men in green play at their potential”. He pointed out the fickle nature of T20 cricket where games can change in a matter of minutes and said that Pakistan can certainly beat India if they get their acts together. “They definitely have the ability to achieve that result. If Pakistan plays to its potential, then they can beat any team in the world including India. Twenty20 cricket is such a format that the whole match can turn in the space of a few balls or even one incident and the Pakistan versus India match will be no different. If Pakistan play at their best, they can certainly beat India,” Wahab said to PakPasson.net. About the prospect of his country winning the competition for the second time, Riaz said that the conditions in the UAE will favour Pakistan as they have played a lot of their cricket there. He rated Pakistan as “leading contenders” to lif the trophy later this year. “Given the conditions and where it’s being held, I believe Pakistan has a very good chance of winning the tournament. Pakistan has played a lot of cricket in UAE, and this gives them a very good chance to win the competition. They’ll be familiar with the conditions, and they’ll know what the ball will do. If they can utilise the conditions and use them to their advantage, then there is no reason why they can’t be considered amongst the leading contenders for the title,” he added. Riaz has had a brilliant performance against India in the ICC ODI World Cup 2011 semi-finals but has gone out of the selection radar owing to poor and inconsistent performances. However, he said that the call of selecting him lies in the hands of selectors and his job is limited to perform and prove what he is “capable of”. He refused to give in to his critics’ calls and said that his performance is as good as it has been and that the selection call is beyond his control. “If it was up to me, then yes you will. But it’s up to the selectors who they want included in the side and who they think will provide the maximum utility. As a player, all you can do is to perform and that’s what my aim is and that’s what I am doing around the world. Lately I’ve played in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), and I have showed what I am capable of, and I don’t think I have to prove it again and again. Regardless of what they feel, I am performing well wherever I am getting a chance to play. So, let’s see what the selectors have in mind and whether they want me to be a part of future squads is totally up to them,” he concluded. Riaz last played for Pakistan in December last year and his inconsistency with the ball led to the departure from the side.

Zimbabwe pull a rabbit out of their hat as Ngarava defends six in last over to beat Ireland

Zimbabwe defended their second-lowest T20I total ever as they stopped Ireland from chasing down 117, eventually winning the match by 03 runs at Castle Avenue, Clontarf to lead the five-match series 1-0. Prior to the 117 today, they had defended 110 against West Indies in 2010. In today’s match, the bowlers turned out to be the real hero, especially Richard Ngarava who bowled a magical 20th over, giving away only two runs when six were required for a win and five for a tie. He not only conceded two runs but also kept the dangerman, Simi Singh, off the strike. Simi Singh, before that over had hit 26 off just 18 balls. In the last over, Singh could only hit two of the four deliveries that he faced, including a single off the last ball when at least four was required to tie the game. The end might not have been ideal for Ireland, but the start to chase was surely one. With Paul Stirling and Kevin O’Brien getting in the groove, it seemed like an easy chase for the Irish as they raced away to 27 without a loss. However, once Stirling was removed by Jongwe, things started to change as soon skipper Andrew Balbirnie was removed as well. Getting into a rhythm, the Zimbabwe spin bowlers began exploiting the huge size of the ground with their flight and getting the Irish players caught in the deep and pressure mounting ever so more. Within the space of 44 balls and 44 runs, the Men in Green lost six key wickets and the Chevrons were all over them. Wellington Masakadza and Ryan Burl took five of those six wickets. It then took a brilliant inning from Simi Singh to get the team back in the mix and almost set them as favourites to win at the end of the 18th over with only 12 runs required from the last two. However, first Luke Jongwe and then Ngrava made sure that the firm favourites were shocked, Jonge gave only six runs in the 19th over to keep Zimbabwe in the game and then Ngarava took them home. Earlier in the morning, after losing the toss and being invited to bat first, Zimbabwe, who were playing without their superstars such as Sean Williams, Brendan Taylor and Sikandar Raza managed to get to 117 courtesy of Regis Chakabva’s 47 and Masakadza’s unbeaten 19 0ff 15 balls.

Today is the last hurdle: St. Lucia Kings skipper du Plessis recovers from concussion to lead them

Faf du Plessis, who has been out of cricket for the past three months after being concussed during the Pakistan Super League in June this year, feels that he is now standing on the last girdle before making a comeback when he leads st. Lucia Kings against Jamaica Tallawahs in their first game of the Caribbean Premier League at Warner Park on August 27. “Today is the last hurdle when [I am] just making sure I pass the full practice at full intensity. And if I do that, then I'll be ready to play,” du Plessis was quoted as saying to ESPNCricinfo. Talking about missing crucial three months including The Hundred, the former South Africa skipper said, "I went over for the first match [in the Hundred] to try and play, but I still suffered quite severe concussion symptoms quite badly and especially with the batting it got worse," he said. "It's been three or four weeks since then [during] which I have worked hard in trying to get back to normal with a good rehab programme, and specialists in England helped me with,” added the 37-year-old. Saying that it has been tough three months away from cricket, the player who has applied his trade all across the world in the shorter format feels that there is a lot of cricket to come this year and he wants to remain fit for it all. "I didn't expect it to take this long and I also didn't expect it to be quite as severe. But I feel like I am at the end of it, which really is pleasing for me. There's a lot of cricket this year that I still need to play," he said. “For winning the match, du Plessis said that he would rely on the brains of coach Andy Flower and icon mentor Daren Sammy. "On the field, I would rely a lot on the other players to help me. Daren Sammy is one of those guys, he is a very experienced leader within the side so we will tap into his plan a lot,” he said. “Andy has worked with the side as well, so we'll tap into his brain a lot. And then on the field, you rely on your experience as a captain to make those instinctive, gut decisions that you would need to make when you know it is so hard in the middle,” added du Plessis who would be looking to make an impact this time around having previously played for St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots previously in the CPL.
