CPL 2021 | BR vs SLK: Barbados Royals etch consolation win in a run feast in St Kitts

Barbados Royals etched a consolation win against Saint Lucia Kings to conclude their tournament on a positive note on Sunday. On a batsmen’s day out, the Royals rode on some fine piece of stroke-play from Kyle Mayers and Glenn Phillips to chase down a target of 191 runs in 18.5 overs. The Royals had a decent start to the chase after Mayers and Johnson Charles put 37 runs on the board for the first wicket in 5.1 overs but a couple of quick wickets pushed them on the backfoot. But what unleashed next was simply a masterclass from Mayers and Phillipes as the two provided the much-needed resistance to the side and made sure that there were no further fall of wickets. The two batsmen played in a cautious manner initially and then took on the Kings’ bowling attack to hammer them all around the park. Mayers remained unbeaten at 81 off 62 that included six maximums and five fours while Phillips notched up a 39-ball 80* where he smashed a total of 9 sixes during the course. Both the batters dominated the Kings’ bowling unit thoroughly and took the team over the line. Roston Chase was the only Saint Lucia bowler to scalp a wicket in the innings. Earlier, the Saint Lucia side posted 190/6 in 20 overs after Chase scored a fifty while Cornwall struck a 26-ball 40. Mayers returned with a three-for and Oshane Thomas picked up a couple of wickets for Barbados. Barbados Royals skipper Jason Holder hailed Mayers and Phillips for their batting after the match. “Credit to Kyle and Glenn, outstanding partnership. It was a really good wicket. On this wicket, you aren't quite sure what a good total is. Lots of positives. Everybody had different spirits. It's been a good campaign for few individuals but not good collectively,” he said.

South Africa took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka after clinching a thumping 9-wicket win in the second clash in Colombo. Chasing a target of 104 runs in 20 overs, the visitors went over the line in the 15th over, courtesy an unbeaten 48-ball 58 from Quinton de Kock. The Proteas started off the chase in a brilliant manner after openers De Kock and Reeza Hendricks put 62 on the board for the first wicket before Hendricks departed for 18 off 19. De Kock was then joined by Aiden Markram and the two batsmen took the side home. Markram scored 21* off 19 during the course. For Sri Lanka, Wanindu Hasaranga was the only bowler to pick up a wicket as he returned with figures of 1/22 in 4 overs. Earlier in the day, the South African bowlers, especially Tabraiz Shamsi and Markram ripped through the Sri Lankan batting line up as the visitors bowled them out for 103 in 18.1 overs. The home side had a dismal start to the proceedings as they lost Dinesh Chandimal early for 5 off 8. Opener Kusal Perera was then joined by Rajapasaka and the two put 28 runs for the second wicket before Rajapasaka was also dismissed by Markram for 20. The Sri Lankan team kept losing wickets at regular intervals and one left tottering at 86/6 to eventually get bundled out. Perera tried to hold the fort from one end but he continuously ran out of partners at the other side. Both Markram and Shamsi scalped three wickets apiece while Fortuin had a couple of dismissals to his name. Nortje and Keshav Maharaj were also among wickets as they picked up one wicket each during the course. South Africa captain Maharaj later lauded the team for the efforts after the win. “All credit to my team. They made my life easier. We had simple plans and it all paid off. It is important that we keep building on the positives. We could bowl better in the powerplay and with our batting,” he said. Sri Lanka skipper Shanaka admitted that there were a few runs short and pointed that the batsmen need to “concentrate more”. “We were targeting 140-150. We knew it would turn and wouldn't be easy in the later parts of the game. I think the batsmen need to concentrate more in the game. We had a good start and we weren't able to capitalize,” he said. The two sides will now face each other in the third and final T20I on Tuesday at the same venue.

The Patriots and Trinbago Knight Riders will be up against each other in the final match of the league stage on Monday in St Kitts. The two sides faced each other in the last encounter on Sunday at the same venue where the Patriots rode on a brilliant hundred from Evin Lewis to win the match by 8 wickets while chasing a target of 160 in 20 overs and cement a place in the semi-final. The SKNP side has already qualified for the semis but will look to carry the momentum before going into the knockouts. Lewis was in terrific form in the last match while Chris Gayle got a quick-fire 35 off 18 during the course. ECB has written to ICC on outcome of cancelled Test vs India: Spokesperson

The England Cricket Board (ECB) has officially asked the ICC to make a decision on the final Test between India and England which was earlier called-off as there was a Covid-19 outbreak in the Indian contingent. “Yes we have written to the ICC,” an ECB spokesperson told PTI. The English board wants the Dispute Resolution Committee of the ICC to take a look at the issue. The board is further expecting that if a forfeiture is granted then it can claim the insurance. In case the match is declared abandoned due to COVID, then the board is going to lose 40 million pound. India’s assistant physio Yogesh Parmar was the latest support staff to get tested positive for the disease. If the ICC declares the Test abandoned then the visitors will take away the series as they presently lead 2-1 but if the hosts get a forfeiture then the series will end 2-2 and the ECB can also claim the insurance as per the DRC ruling. The playing conditions of the World Test Championship allow the teams to not take the field in certain conditions. The conditions state: "Any matches that do not take place due to the Acceptable Non-Compliance of one or both Parties (as defined in the World Test Championship Competition Terms) shall not be taken into account in the calculation of the Points Percentage."
