Former England Test batsman Ben Duckett believes that Nottinghamshire's shock defeat to Glamorgan in the Division 02 County Championship game is a 'wake-up call.'
After claiming a comprehensive 10-wicket win in their season opener against Sussex, Notts were well beaten by Glamorgan this week despite brilliant back-to-back knocks from Duckett (122 & 95).
Speaking to the reporters, Duckett termed the defeat as "disappointing", admitting that his side were comprehensively outplayed from the start.
"It's disappointing and, if I'm honest, a slight wake-up call. There will be tough games in this division, and that was one of them," he said.
"I just feel like we were outplayed from the start, and sometimes you do have to take your hat off to the opposition and say well done," he added.
Duckett was full of praise for pacers Timm van der Gugten, who claimed six wickets across two innings.
"The way they bowled, I certainly had to work for most of my runs and the way (Timm) Van der Gugten bowled really won them the game," he added. "The toss was crucial, but there were little periods where we got it wrong, and they killed us," he said.
Duckett was delighted with his performance, and while he is disappointed with the overall result, the southpaw believes that there is still a long way to go in the championship, and there is no point in overthinking about what has transpired.
"For myself, I'm happy to have started that way, and the main thing is that there are a lot of games to come, and there are positives we can take from this," he said.
It is early in the year, and not many people win the division and go unbeaten throughout the whole summer. We are disappointed, but there is no point in getting down about this because we are straight into another challenging game.
Nottinghamshire were without the services of champion seamer Stuart Broad for this week's encounter and were missing a few of their overseas recruits.
After taking a 77-run first-innings lead, Glamorgan knocked over Notts for a mere 242, with Gungten and James Weighell claiming six wickets between them.
A target of 165 was then successfully overhauled thanks to an unbeaten half-century from Marnus Labuschagne and a quickfire 48-ball 47* from Kiran Carlson.
Nottinghamshire will now lock horns with Durham at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street between April 21-and 24.
