County Championship 2022 | Sam, Rhodes seal an unlikely draw for Warwickshire

Warwickshire required their batters to step up on the final day to avoid an imminent defeat. And they did, in style. The two overnight players, Sam Hain and Will Rhodes, occupied the crease for the entire day to push the game towards an unlikely draw.

The Will Rhodes-led team were in all sorts of deep waters at 25/3 on the penultimate day. Jordan Thompson had dismantled the top order and increased the chances of a Yorkshire victory. Then, Sam Hain and the skipper took command of the situation to prevent till stumps.

And when the duo walked in on the final day, Warwickshire still trailed by 149 runs. But, nevertheless, they took on the challenge head-on and survived the opening spell. And then, when the opportunity arose, Rhodes and Hain scored freely.

Yorkshire tried all tricks in the books to break the stubborn partnership but to no avail. Steven Patterson used eight bowlers to get the eluding breakthrough, but they could not break Hain and Rhodes’ resolve.

Both the batters reached their century in the third session, and the two teams shook hands after a few overs. Warwickshire’s score read 252/3 at the end, with Rhodes and Hain adding 227 runs for the fourth wicket.

Sam Hain remained unbeaten on 109, a Herculean effort which came off 332 balls. He scored twelve boundaries and a six during his stay in the middle. On the other hand, Rhodes battled along for 297 balls to remain not out on 111.
