County Championship 2022 | Keaton Jennings's double hundred puts Lancashire in the driving seat

Lancashire continued to dominate the proceedings against the home team on Day 2. They have reduced Yorkshire to 53/2 after posting a humongous first innings total of 566/9. 

Lancashire resumed the day on 288/3, with skipper Dane Vilas giving centurion Keaton Jennings company. The pair was in no mood of throwing away their wickets and remained unscathed in the first session. Jennings also brought up his double century before the lunch break.

The afternoon session brought in some respite for the home team as Dominic Bess sent back Vilas on 82. Unfortunately, the skipper got trapped in front of the stumps, and thus, a 177-run partnership ended. Vilas’ knock came at a quick pace and included nine fours and two sixes.

Jennings continued to pile on runs with Philip Salt (37) at the other end. Finally, the southpaw’s knock came to an anti-climactic end as he got run out on 238. He faced 408 balls and scored thirty-two fours throughout his marathon innings.

Salt, Luke Wood and the tail propelled the team’s score and helped their side post a total of 566 runs on the board allowing the skipper to declare the innings. Yorkshire needed to play safe and bat out the 22 overs remaining in the day’s play. 

However, Yorkshire lost their first wicket on 11. Tom Bailey found Adam Lyth in front of the stumps on 10. The in-form Dawid Malan joined George Hill in the middle, with the duo looking to return on Day 3 as overnight batters. 

But Malan fell to George Balderson on 23, who had him caught at short midwicket. With Joe Root and Harry Brook still to follow, Yorkshire will back themselves to get close to Lancashire’s 1st innings total. However, it is still a mountain to climb for the home side.
