County Championship 2022 | Middlesex collapse as Pattinson and Broad rip through the batting order

The second day of the Nottinghamshire vs Middlesex saw an embarrassing batting collapse of the latter as none of their batters except Peter Handscomb, and Mark Stoneman could cross the 30-run mark and eventually bundled out for a meagre total of 196. 

Starting the second day from 329/5, Nottinghamshire put 415 on the board as Luke Fletcher weaved magic and clobbered a brilliant half-century with the help of five fours and two sixes. It was a display of aggressive batting from the number 11 player of Nottinghamshire as he took the Middlesex bowlers to the cleaners before Martin Andersson dismissed him for the score of 50 (off 54).

Middlesex, in reply, got off to the terrible start possible as their opener Sam Robson went out cheaply before Josh De Caires, engaged in a horrific runout and walked back after a short stay. 

Skipper Peter Handscomb then made a short alliance with Stoneman to steady the unmoved ship of Middlesex. They shared a fifty run stand before Pattinson bowled Stoneman shortly after tea. 

Middlesex was in a state of bother with the scorecard reading 94-3. Handscomb was looking for a batter on the other side of the crease, and Max Holden gave him a sigh of relief as he looked in good touch and tried attacking the opposition. However, the Notts bowlers had a different plan as they picked the priced wicket of the Middlesex skipper on 48, leaving them swivelling at 127/4. 

Shortly after that, at the gap of 2 overs, the Nottinghamshire bowlers took two more wickets and brought the Middlesex team to their knees. Except for Martin Andersson, none of their tailenders could survive on the pitch, which proved to be a paradise for the fast bowlers as Nottinghamshire got the first-innings lead of 219 runs on the second day of the game. 

James Pattinson, the star bowler of Nottinghamshire, bagged four wickets, Stuart Broad returned with three, while Liam Patterson-White and Luke Fletcher had shared one each. 

For Nottinghamshire's second innings, the Night Watchman Fletcher and Hammed walked in to bat and took a lead of 225 runs at the end of the second day's play.
