County Championship 2022 | Division One Round-up, July 25

The 2022 County Championship resumed on Monday, July 25, with a set of five Division One matches across England. At the end of the opening day of action, here is a look at the high points from each of those five matches.


Essex vs Somerset

Hosts Essex batted out the entire opening day to reach 281-3. Opener Nick Browne reached his century and will resume his side’s innings on Day 2 alongside Paul Walter (57*).

For the visitors, Craig Overton, Matt Renshaw and veteran Australian speedster Peter Siddle picked a wicket each.

 Gloucestershire vs Northamptonshire

Division One wooden-spooners Gloucestershire piled up 317 runs before getting shot out in the twilight stage of the opening day. Opener Chris Dent, wicketkeeper-batsman James Bracey and all-rounder Ryan Higgins charted handy half-centuries while visitors’ Rob Keogh claimed three wickets in the innings.

The Northamptonshire openers survived the remaining 12 overs of the day to wipe out 30 runs from the Gloucestershire’s first innings total.

Lancashire vs Kent

Only 34.2 overs were bowled on a rain-soddened opening day at Manchester’s Old Trafford, one which saw Lancashire lose four wickets. Captain Steven Croft and Indian import Washington Sundar will resume proceedings for the hosts on Day 2.

Kent’s Indian-based speedster Navdeep Saini made opening headlines with his three-fer.

Surrey vs Warwickshire

Put into bat, Warwickshire lost eight wickets before stumps, including one on the penultimate ball of the opening day. They reached 240-8 with all-rounder Nathan McAndrew unbeaten at the crease at 40.

Yorkshire vs Hampshire

Scarborough’s North Marine Road Ground also witnessed rain interruptions, thus prompting Day 1 to be cut short to 54.2 overs.

Yorkshire’s decision to bat first backfired in overcast conditions as they lost eight wickets for just 158 before early stumps. Notably, 116 of those runs were shared by half-centurions Dominic Bess and Will Fraine during their seventh-wicket stand.

None of the other batters managed to reach the double digits, as the other six fallen wickets amounted for just 25 runs between them.
