Bumrah, Shami and Chahal climb to the apex of Indian bowling

Indian seam bowling duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami put on a clinic on Tuesday at the Oval as they ran past England's batting line-up courtesy of a seam and swing bowling exhibition.

The day's hero was the ever so irresistible Bumrah, who made the ball talk both ways to claim six English wickets for just 19 runs. The 28-year-old registered his career-best figures of 6/19. In the process, he also claimed the record for best figures by an Indian against England.

The record was previously held by Ashish Nehra, who claimed 6-23 at Kingsmead, Durban, at the 2003 World Cup.

This was Bumrah's 2nd 5-for, and his average in this format after this performance reads 24.30- the best by an Indian bowler (with 100+ wickets). What's even more remarkable about Bumrah's ODI stats is that in an era of flat pitches, short boundaries and two new balls, he concedes just 4.63 runs per over.

Apart from his relentless accuracy, another reason why his economy rate is so low is that opposition batters, recognizing that he is a significant threat, tend to play him out while going hard at others.

Bumrah was not the only bowler who made the ball talk, though. He was brilliantly supported by his partner-in-crime and one of the most underrated ODI bowlers, Mohammed Shami.

Since the start of 2018, no new ball bowler among full-membered nations has had a better strike rate than Shami.

In 27 innings, Shami has taken 56 wickets as a new ball bowler at an average of 24.32 and a staggering strike rate of 25. He also has the all-time second-best average (25.63) among Indians.

The champion seamer once again reminded everyone of his quality at the Oval as he made the ball both ways, cutting Ben Stokes in half with a nip-backer before hitting the top of the off-stump of Craig Overton.

Shami claimed three wickets and, in the process, became the joint third-fastest to 150 ODI wickets.

Interestingly, each of the top-3 Indian bowlers with the best average were a part of the team that obliterated England by ten wickets at the Oval on Tuesday. Yuzvendra Chahal has 104 wickets with an average of 27.53, placed third alongside Bumrah and Shami.

Legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev has 273 wickets to boot with an average of 27.45, followed by Ajit Agarkar with 288 wickets with an average of 27.85, rounding off the top-5 list.

Javagal Srinath, who has taken 315 wickets with an average of 28.08, is at the 6th spot, while the country's leading wicket-taker- Anil Kumble- is at the 11th spot with his 337 wickets coming at an average of 30.9.
