After India and Pakistan’s strained relations, India's and Bangladesh's ties are also going downhill, especially after the release of Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL 2026 season. The pacer was roped in by the Kolkata Knight Riders for a whopping 9.20 crore, but due to the ongoing turmoil against Hindus in Bangladesh, pressure mounted on the franchise to release the fast bowler.

After this sudden decision to remove Mustafizur from the IPL, things escalated quickly as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) got furious and the board has eventually decided to write a letter to the ICC, demanding their T20 World Cup matches to be shifted from India to Sri Lanka.

The Tigers will play three out of their four group stage matches at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata, and one will be played at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. However, BCB has urged the ICC to review the security in India, and has decided to take strong action against BCCI..

BCCI hits back at BCB with strong statement

After BCB’s verbal threats, the BCCI, the richest cricket board issued a stern warning and reacted to the ongoing report, stating that relocating the Bangladesh matches to Sri Lanka will be a logistical nightmare, and the schedule cannot be changed due to someone’s demand.

“You can't just change games at someone's whims and fancies. It is a logistical nightmare. Think about opposition teams. Their air tickets, hotels are booked,” news agency PTI quoted a BCCI source as saying.

"Also, on all days, there are three games each, which means one game is in Sri Lanka. There is a broadcast crew. So it will be easier said than done," the source added.

IPL broadcast stopped in Bangladesh as tension escalates

After Mustafizur was removed from the IPL, the BCB held an emergency meeting on Saturday, and they were ordered by its sports ministry to urge ICC to relocate their T20 World Cup matches to Sri Lanka. Also, the upcoming IPL 2026 season won’t be broadcast in Bangladesh.

"As the adviser in charge of the Ministry of Sports, I have instructed the Cricket Control Board to put the entire matter in writing and explain it to the ICC," government advisor Asif Nazrul wrote in Bengali on his Facebook page.

"The board must make it clear that if a Bangladeshi cricketer, despite being under contract, cannot play in India, then the Bangladesh national team cannot feel safe travelling to India to play the World Cup. I have also directed the board to formally request that Bangladesh's World Cup matches be held in Sri Lanka instead," he added.

As of now, all the Bangladesh matches are scheduled in India, and they are placed in the group alongside Italy, West Indies, England and Nepal.
