  • Ashwin Has Started Making An Impact Sanjay Manjrekar Delighted With The Off Spinners Recall To The T20i Set Up

Sanjay Manjrekar delighted with Ashwin's recall to the T20I set-up

Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has termed the management's decision to recall ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in the T20I line-up as an excellent one.

Ashwin, 35, returned to the T20I team for the ongoing series against the West Indies. In 3 games so far, the veteran off-spinner has managed just three wickets but his economy rate (6.67) has been excellent.

Speaking on SPORTS18's show, Manjrekar said that Ashwin will form a perfect foil to an attacking spinner like Yuzvendra Chahal as has championed the art of defensive bowling.

"I think Ashwin's selection on this tour was an excellent one. In the last couple of years in the Indian T20 league, Ashwin has started making an impact. I like Ashwin when he's with somebody like Chahal. So, the onus is not on Ashwin to change the tide."

Ashwin's T2OI career has been a topsy-turvy one. From being the leading spinner for a number of years, the off-spinner fell out of favor in 2017 as wrist-spinners started to make their mark in the shortest format.

The Tamil Nadu cricketer earned a recall after five years ahead of the T20 World Cup last year, where he featured in 3 matches.

Ashwin has mastered the art of bowling dry - Sanjay Manjrekar

While Manjrekar admits that Ashwin is no longer the first choice wicket-taking option in T20Is, he believes that the champion spinners has nailed the art of bowling dry, something he believes will complement Chahal beautifully.

"You know, the spinner's job in T20 cricket, in the middle phase, is to get wickets like Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj do for South Africa. That's where Ashwin lacked a bit as a T20 spinner. He focused a lot on the economy, but when you have somebody like Chahal."

"Ashwin has mastered the art of being economical in T20 cricket. That's what you'll get with Ashwin, that compliment to the other main wicket-taking spinner in the team," Manjrekar pointed out on.

While Ashwin's selection for the Asia Cup is almost certain, it will be interesting to see whether he earns a ticket to Australia for the marquee event.
