Afghanistan made an emphatic start to their Asia Cup 2022 campaign as they thrashed Sri Lanka by eight wickets in a one-sided affair at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Saturday, August 27.

Afghanistan bowlers were at their lethal best as they ripped apart Sri Lanka's batting lineup and bundled them out for just 105 runs after winning the toss.

In reply, Afghanistan overhauled the target without breaking a sweat at the loss of just two wickets.

As the team made an astounding start to their Asia Cup 2022 journey, Asghar Afghan claimed that their are high chances of Afghanistan team winning the Asia Cup 2022 title this year.

The 35-year-old asserted that the Afghanistan team that is taking part in Asia Cup 2022 is highly rich in experience when it comes to the shortest format and playing at a familiar venue like Dubai makes them a further favorite to lift the Asia Cup 2022 trophy.

Asghar, while speaking to CricTracker, said:

“I still believe that Afghanistan can win the Asia Cup, and I would favor them because our boys are very much experienced in the T20 format, especially when they play in Dubai."

"The current form of the team and the combination (of players) that they’re deploying are good. Though Sri Lanka has played more matches than us, our preparation is very strong.”

Hope they enter the tournament with a winning mindset: Asghar Afghan

Asghar further conceded that his team's biggest plus is that they "adapt and adjust" to the conditions quickly. The former captain also urged his teammates to play the entire tournament with a winning mindset.

“One of the strengths of our players is that they adapt and adjust to the conditions quickly. I hope they win this time, and I’ll wish that they enter the tournament with the mindset of winning it, and not just playing it."

"Because we played the World Cup in Dubai too, and have had a good amount of experience. If they play with the belief that they can win, then no other team would be able to tackle them. It’s just that the players should have the belief that they can do this.”

Afghanistan will be looking to extend its winning streak when they lock horns with Bangladesh in the third match of Group B at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, August 30.
