  • Angelo Mathews Recovers From Covid 19 Available For The Second Test Against Australia

Angelo Mathews recovers from Covid-19, available for the second Test against Australia

Sri Lankan batter Angelo Mathews, who tested positive for COVID-19 during the first Test against Australia, has completed his isolation and recovered from the virus. As a result, he will be available for selection in the second Test of the two-match series against Australia, starting on July 8 in Galle.

On Day 3 of the first Test in Galle, Mathews was feeling unwell and underwent a test for Covid-19. Later he tested positive for the virus and could not participate in the rest of the Test match.

However, he is now fit and ready to join up with the squad, having completed his self-isolation. He will be expected to impact the second and final Test at Galle significantly.

“Angelo Mathews, who contracted Covid-19, has recovered and will be available for selections for the 2nd Test,” Sri Lanka Cricket tweeted.

The 35-year-old will rejoin the team ahead of the second Test later today.

“Medical clearance has been given for the player to engage in the game.

Accordingly, Mathews will rejoin the team, starting today,” the board added.

Sri Lanka lost the first Test by ten wickets. Australia outplayed the hosts in all departments and finished the Test match within 154 overs.

Mathews, who has been in fine form this year in Tests, scored 39 in the first innings before testing positive for Covid-19 on Day 3 of the Test match. The right-hander has scored 477 Test runs at an average of 68.1 in 2022 and will be a crucial player for Sri Lanka in the second Test.

The hosts will be looking to bounce back in the second Test and level the two-match series 1-1.
