The Pakistan government has agreed to allocate land to star opening batsman Ahmed Shehzad for his cricket academy in Quetta. Earlier this week, the 32-year-old had made an announcement about building a national-level cricket academy in Quetta for the emerging young talents of Balochistan.

Shehzad has also raised his vocal support for the inclusion of Quetta-based players in Pakistan Super League (PSL).

On January 7, Caretaker Provincial Information Minister Jan Achakzai and out-of-favor cricketer Ahmed Shehzad held a press conference together during which they revealed their plans of making a national-level cricket academy in Quetta, Balochistan. Addressing to the reporters at the conference, Shehzad said:

“I am building an academy for the youth of Quetta. Balochistan government will need help to build the academy. The cricketers here will play in the PSL and the national team.”

Jan Achakzai claimed that the Balochistan government has been planning to provide sports facilities for the young emerging talents of Balochistan, and they had invited Ahmed Shehzad to Quetta owing to his deep-rooted love for the city.

On the cricketing front, Shehzad continues to remain on the sidelines of Pakistan’s national affairs despite his prolific white-ball record with the bat. The star opening batsman has not been considered for national selection ever since he faced Sri Lanka in a T20I match at Lahore in October 2019.

So far in his international career, the cricketer has represented his nation in 13 Tests, 81 ODIs and 59 T20Is since his top-level debut in 2009.

Ahmed Shehzad was also ignored by each of the six competing PSL franchises during the players draft in December 2023. The prodigious batting talent, who was part of the Quetta Gladiators’ PSL-winning side in 2019, recently announced his exit from PCB’s premier T20 tournament.
