Former Indian cricketer Anjum Chopra has termed the accession of domestic giant Chandrakant Pandit to the head coach position of the Kolkata Knight Riders as the beginning of a new era for Indian coaches.

Pandit, who led Madhya Pradesh to an elusive Ranji Trophy title earlier this year, will replace Brendon McCullum.

The coaching position at KKR was left vacant following the end of the 15th IPL season after McCullum took up the position of the head coach of England's men's team.

In her column for IANS, Chopra reckoned that while coaching a FC team is markedly different as compared to coaching a franchise, Pandit has all the necessary tools to nail the new challenge.

"Chandrakant Pandit’s accession to the role of head coach of an IPL franchise marks a new beginning for Indian coaches,"

"There is always a first time. His methodology with the IPL team might be different but he thrives on a strong base. He always says cricket is still the same. I believe it too,"

Can Chandrakant Pandit emulate his Ranji Trophy success with KKR?

Pandit, who represented India in 5 Tests and 36 ODIs between 1986-92, is a serial Trophy winner in domestic cricket.

Apart from coaching Mumbai to Ranji Trophy titles in 2003, 2004 and 2016, he has also led Vidarbha to back-to-back championship triumphs in 2018 and 2019. He added another feather to his cap during the last season with Madhya Pradesh.

Pandit's immediate task will be to resurrect KKR's fortunes as the franchise has been quite inconsistent in the past few seasons.
