On Monday, the cricket fraternity witnessed a unique incident on the field, as veteran Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews was timed out against Bangladesh in the ongoing World Cup.
Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed for timed out after Mathews failed to take his guard in time because of helmet malfunctioning. After consulting with each other, the on-field umpires found Mathews guilty of violating the law, declaring him out.
While Shakib's action received mixed reactions from fans and experts, including the guardians of the spirit of the game, Mathews took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his frustration. Meanwhile, Delhi police utilised the occasion perfectly to spread traffic awareness, albeit in a hilarious way.
Taking to its official handle on X, Delhi police posted a message for general public, using Mathews' dismissal as an example in a cryptic manner. The post read,
"Delhitees! we hope now you have understood the importance of a HELMET."
The post also had a meme featuring Mathews with a caption,
"A good helmet can protect you from being timed out."
After the incident, Mathews seemed displeased throughout the game, as he was involved in a few heated altercations with the Bangladesh players. Regarding the game, the Tigers eventually emerged victorious by seven wickets, adding two points to their tally and move to the seventh spot in the points table.
