Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj in IPL 2025 (Source: AP)
In a significant announcement on Saturday (May 24), the BCCI revealed India’s 18-member squad for the upcoming five-match Test series against England. Shubman Gill has been named the new Test captain, with Rishabh Pant as his deputy. Interestingly, 17 of the 18 players selected are currently part of IPL 2025 franchises.
However, what has turned heads is the complete absence of any player from Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the squad. On the other hand, Gujarat Titans (GT) lead the chart with five selections.
In this article, let's take a look at the IPL 2025 team-wise breakdown of India’s squad for the England:
Gujarat Titans (5)
GT captain Shubman Gill will now don the captain’s armband in the longest format, with his teammate B Sai Sudharsan earning a maiden Test call-up. Washington Sundar, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna also find themselves in the squad, reflecting GT’s well-rounded representation.
Delhi Capitals (3)
Veteran batter KL Rahul is likely to partner Gill at the top, following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket. He’s joined by Kuldeep Yadav and Karun Nair while Kuldeep Yadav is set to feature in red-ball cricket after a gap of several months.
Lucknow Super Giants (3)
India’s first-choice wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant makes a grand return and will serve as vice-captain. Pace-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur is back after more than a year, while Akash Deep retains his spot.
Rajasthan Royals (2)
Top-order batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel, both standout performers in India’s recent home series against England, continue to be key members of the squad.
Mumbai Indians (1)
World No. 1 Test bowler Jasprit Bumrah remains the spearhead of India’s pace attack. His presence brings experience and firepower to India’s bowling lineup.
Chennai Super Kings (1)
Veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is the senior-most player in the squad. Ranked the No. 1 Test all-rounder, Jadeja will be crucial to India’s fortunes in England.
Punjab Kings (1)
Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh has earned his maiden Test call-up, following consistent performances in domestic cricket and the IPL.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (1)
Nitish Kumar Reddy, who made his debut against Australia earlier this year, retains his place despite a quiet IPL 2025 season.
RCB & KKR Miss Out Completely
In a surprise omission, it is important to mention that no players from Royal Challengers Bengaluru or Kolkata Knight Riders have been a part of the India's squad for England.
