Australian leg-spinner, Adam Zampa achieved a monumental feat by equalling Muttiah Muralitharan's record for the most wickets taken by a spinner in a single World Cup edition. This landmark achievement came during the World Cup 2023 final against India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

IND vs AUS: Zampa's World Cup heroics bring him level with Muralitharan

The leg-spinner concluded the 2023 World Cup campaign with 23 wickets from 11 matches, mirroring the record set by Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan back in 2007.

Muralitharan had achieved this feat over 10 matches with an impressive economy rate of 4.14, including two four-wicket hauls. Zampa's economy rate stood at 5.36, and his final match figures against India were 10-0-44-1, with the critical wicket of Jasprit Bumrah bringing him level with Muralitharan.

Zampa's journey in the tournament has been a stuff of dreams. Initially, he had a modest start with just one wicket in two matches, casting doubts on his form. However, defying early skepticism, Zampa demonstrated remarkable improvement.

His exceptional performance included three consecutive four-wicket hauls against Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and the Netherlands, followed by two three-wicket hauls against New Zealand and England. Although he experienced a setback with no wickets against South Africa, he bounced back impressively in the final.

Additionally, Zampa made history as the first overseas bowler to reach 50 ODI wickets on Indian soil, a milestone he achieved in just 27 matches. In his ODI career spanning 96 matches, Zampa has claimed 165 wickets, including 11 four-wicket hauls and a five-wicket haul.

Meanwhile, the match also saw Australia's bowling unit put up a disciplined performance, restricting India to 240 runs. In response, Australia had a steady start in their chase, standing at 40/1 after four overs.
