In the second match of the first day of Super 12 ICC World Cup 2022, England and Afghanistan played against each other.
England after winning the toss decided to field first and the English bowler's repaid the faith Jos Buttler showed in them.
With the ball in hand in the first innings, it was Sam Curran who starred for England. His figures in the innings read.
Sam Curran's bowling figures vs Afghanistan
The wickets that he picked up are:
- Ibrahim Zadran
- Usman Ghani
- Azmatullah Omarzai
- Rashid Khan
- Fazalhaq Farooqi
All these wickets were very significant incase of the stages that they were taken. Ibrahim Zadran has been one of the most consistent run scorer for Afghanistan in recent times. He was also looking good when Curran picked him up, this ensured that the foundation of the Afghan innings was not laid. The same was the case with the wicket of Usman Ghani.
Towards the end Curran picking up the wickets of Omarzai and Rashid Khan ensured that the repair work was also not allowed.
In all Curran's spell ensured that neither the base nor the finishing of Afghanistan was strong. But what was it that worked out for Curran during the innings:
- Mark Wood built a great pressure at the beginning that forced the Afghan batters to take risk against Sam Curran.
- Curran used the bounce the of the wicket and bowled quite a few short balls. In fact four of his five wickets came of deliveries that were bowled back of the length.
- He was right on spot on with his changes his length and the use of his variations.
All in all, it was a complete and ideal T20 bowling from Curran. The English team and the fans will be hoping that he continues his form ahead in the tournament.
