There are some reasons why Rizwan should replace Masood as Test captain [Source: AP]
Pakistan had a horrible outing in the second Test against West Indies, as the Men in Maroon thrashed them by 120 runs to secure a historic win in Multan. Chasing a tough target of 254 runs, Pakistan were bowled out for 133 runs, as West Indies restored parity after kickstarting the tour on a losing note.
Pakistan's Test captain Shan Masood received massive backlash following the team's abysmal performance in the second match. Statistically, Masood has been one of the worst captains of late, managing only three wins, while losing nine Tests since 2023.
Thus, considering his horrendous performance as a leader, Pakistan might consider revamping their leadership group by appointing either Mohammad Rizwan or Saud Shakeel as their captain. However, there are three major reasons why Rizwan could pip Shakeel in the race, as mentioned below.
Extraordinary Success As ODI Captain
- Mohammad Rizwan has been outstanding as an ODI captain for Pakistan. Since taking over the reins from Babar Azam, Rizwan has led Pakistan to seven ODI wins, including historic series triumphs in Australia and South Africa.
- Apart from his impressive record, Rizwan's leadership acumen haven't gone unnoticed, with the keeper-batter receiving massive praise for his astute captaincy in the 50-over format.
- Therefore, considering his recent performance as the ODI captain, Pakistan might appoint Rizwan as their Test captain ahead of the next WTC cycle.
Performance In Red-Ball Cricket
- Mohammad Rizwan has been one of the most dependable batters for Pakistan in Test cricket. He was prolific in the 2023-25 WTC cycle, amassing 900 runs in 22 innings at a magnificent average of 45.
- While his teammates couldn't put up a fight, Rizwan emerged as Pakistan's lone warrior in the West Indies Tests, scoring the most runs in the series.
- So, given that he has been a proven performer for Pakistan, Rizwan should be the frontrunner to replace Masood as Test captain.
No Better Options Available
- If Shan Masood loses Test captaincy, Pakistan will be left with Rizwan, Babar Azam, Shaheen, Saud Shakeel and Agha Salman as his potential replacements. While Babar and Shaheen's place in the Test side is in threat, Saud Shakeel and Agha Salman lack captaincy experience.
- Thus, the lack of suitable options might ease things for Rizwan, who could be named as the Test skipper for the next WTC cycle.
