India might suffer a serious setback before the ICC Champions Trophy, with uncertainty looming over Jasprit Bumrah's participation in the marquee event. Bumrah, who developed a swelling on his back, is undergoing rehabilitation since the unfortunate injury cut short his Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign during the final Test at Sydney Cricket Ground.

BCCI Searching For Bumrah's Backup In Champions Trophy

According to a Times Of India (TOI) report, New Zealand's renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr Rowan Schouten will assess Jasprit Bumrah's injury. The fast bowler might even plan a consultation visit to the Oceanian country after receiving the surgeon's report and feedback.

A reliable source informed TOI that the BCCI is closely monitoring Bumrah's progress; however, it's highly unlikely that the ace speedster will be fully fit before the Champions Trophy

"The BCCI medical team is in touch with Schouten in New Zealand. The board had also planned a visit for Bumrah to New Zealand. But that hasn't happened yet. The selectors know it will be a miracle if Bumrah turns up 100% fit in the given timeline," the source was quoted as saying by TOI.

Interestingly, Schouten had operated on Bumrah when the pacer was sidelined from action in 2022. After playing a single T20I against Australia, Bumrah was ruled out due to a recurring back injury, which also kept him out of the T20 World Cup in Australia. His frontal action has been a major reason behind frequent back injury setbacks throughout his career.

Mohammed Shami To Lead India's Pace Battery In Champions Trophy?

Meanwhile, Bumrah's long-time colleague Mohammed Shami has toned down his physique, getting supremely fit for the Champions Trophy. As claimed by the report, Shami is bowling in full tilt and will likely feature in the three-match ODI series against England.
