Veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami's absence looms over the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season due to a left ankle injury, signalling disappointment for Gujarat Titans. Last season's purple cap holder, Shami, faces surgery in the UK, sidelining him from the cricketing extravaganza, according to a source from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The 33-year-old, absent from the ongoing Test series against England, last showcased his skills during India's clash with Australia in the ODI World Cup final last November. Despite grappling with landing issues, Shami's determination propelled him through the World Cup, contributing significantly with 24 wickets to India's stellar campaign.

Recognized with the esteemed Arjuna Award, Shami boasts an impressive tally of 229 Test, 195 ODI, and 24 T20 wickets over his illustrious decade-long career. However, uncertainties loom regarding the effectiveness of the National Cricket Academy's (NCA) rehabilitation program tailored for Shami's injury recovery.

With Shami's void to fill, the Gujarat Titans face the daunting task of finding a suitable replacement to maintain their bowling prowess.

3 Players Who Could Replace Mohammed Shami in Gujarat Titans 2024 Squad

1) Ishan Porel

Ishan Porel emerges as a potential addition to the Gujarat Titans (GT) squad, being unsold in the auctions. Hailing from Bengal, the promising bowler has ascended from U19 to India A, utilising his height to generate sharp bounce. Earlier picked by PBKS at his base price of INR 20 lakh, Porel is hailed as a future star by coach Anil Kumble.

He made his debut against Rajasthan Royals back in 2021. His inclusion serves as an ideal backup for Bengal compatriot Shami, reinforcing GT's bowling lineup.

2) Kamlesh Nagarkoti

Kamlesh Nagarkoti, the Rajasthan seamer, emerged as a promising fast bowler during the 2018 U19 World Cup, securing a spot in the KKR squad for the IPL that year. Sadly, a back injury sidelined him for over a year, requiring extensive rehabilitation.

Despite returning for the 2020 IPL, he only managed 5 wickets in 10 games before being released. He then joined Delhi Capitals but finds himself unsold now. With Shami's absence, Nagarkoti could be a potential replacement for GT, offering hope for redemption in his cricketing journey.

3) Lance Morris

Regarded as the wild thing, Lance Morris grabbed a million eyeballs through his scintillating performances in the recently held Big Bash League season. However, despite his heroics in the tournament, Morris was unable to fetch any bid for himself, going unsold in the IPL mini auction.

An express pacer who hits the deck hard, Morris can add immense value to the Titans, who have several new ball specialists in their squad.
